About this role
Job Overview
You will run accounting for a multi-site, nonprofit community health network with several hundred employees, reporting directly to the CFO. As the senior accounting leader, you own the accuracy and timing of the organization's financial reporting, the close, the audits, and the controls behind them.
The organization relies heavily on federal grant funding, so grant accounting and federal compliance are a core part of the job. You will be the person the CFO, the auditors, and the accounting team turn to for the final answer on the numbers.
Budgeting, forecasting, and audit management sit with a separate finance manager, and payroll has its own owner. You are accountable for the accounting itself: clean books, a reliable close, and strong controls. Close, day-to-day collaboration with the budget and analyst side of the team is a core expectation, because their forecasts start from your actuals.
This role is mostly in office.
What you will do
- Lead accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, fixed assets, grant accounting, cash management, and account reconciliations.
- Run the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, and deliver accurate financial statements, supporting schedules, and executive reports on schedule.
- Keep the books audit-ready and provide the schedules and reconciliations needed for the annual financial statement audit and Single Audit.
- Keep the organization compliant with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, HRSA requirements, Federal Uniform Guidance, and other federal and state regulations.
- Oversee grant accounting, treasury, reimbursement accounting, and internal controls.
- Work closely with the finance manager who owns budgeting, forecasting, and audits, and with the payroll lead, so actuals, budgets, and payroll entries tie out.
- Manage and develop an accounting team of 4 to 5 staff accountants and improve how the team works.
Required experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
- Active CPA license.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years leading or supervising accounting staff.
- Experience preparing GAAP financial statements and supporting annual financial statement audits.
- Working knowledge of nonprofit accounting, grant accounting, and healthcare finance.
- Advanced Excel and hands-on experience with an ERP system.
Preferred experience
- FQHC or community health center finance experience.
- Candidates from other nonprofit healthcare settings, such as hospitals, health systems, or behavioral health organizations, are also a strong fit.
- Single Audit and Uniform Guidance experience.
- HRSA grant reporting.
- NetSuite.
- Public accounting experience with nonprofit or healthcare clients.
