About this role
A Snapshot of Your Day
Siemens Energy is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer specializing in marine power, electric propulsion, drives, and vessel control systems. In this role, you will design and integrate electrical power and propulsion systems for commercial, government, and naval marine applications.
You will work across the complete vessel electrical system, including power generation and distribution, switchboards, variable frequency drives, propulsion motors, Power Management Systems (PMS), propulsion control, protection, and automation interfaces.
The ideal candidate has 5 to 10+ years of hands-on marine electrical engineering experience and understands how power generation, distribution, propulsion, drives, protection, and control systems operate together as an integrated vessel system.
How You’ll Make an Impact
- Design and develop marine electrical power systems, including generation, LV/MV distribution, switchboards, transformers, propulsion drives and motors, and auxiliary power systems; develop and review single-line diagrams, system architecture, equipment specifications, load analyses, power balance calculations, and other electrical design documentation.
- Engineer and integrate variable frequency drives, electric propulsion, and vessel control systems, including drive/motor interfaces, propulsion control, operating modes, interlocks, protection concepts, and interfaces with switchboards, generators, vessel automation, and bridge systems.
- Develop and review Power Management System (PMS) concepts and integrated control requirements, including generator sequencing, load sharing and shedding, synchronization, blackout prevention/recovery, spinning reserve, operating-mode management, functional requirements, control narratives, interface specifications, alarm philosophies, and cause-and-effect logic.
- Perform or review electrical power system studies, including short-circuit, protection coordination/selectivity, load flow, motor starting, harmonic, and system stability studies; use modeling and simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, SIMIT, or Simcenter Amesim when beneficial for system analysis, control validation, or HIL testing.
- Collaborate across engineering disciplines and external stakeholders through technical design reviews, working closely with mechanical, automation, controls, naval architecture, project engineering, suppliers, shipyards, and customers while ensuring designs comply with applicable IEC/IEEE standards and marine classification requirements, including ABS, DNV, and Lloyd’s Register.
- Support system integration, testing, and commissioning activities, including FAT, system integration testing, harbor acceptance testing, and sea trials; troubleshoot complex electrical, drive, propulsion, and control-system issues throughout integration and commissioning.
What You Bring
You don't need to check every box to be considered. We're looking for candidates who bring strong experience in one or more of the key areas below and are eager to develop additional expertise across marine electrical power, propulsion, and control systems. If that sounds like you, we encourage you to apply.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related electrical engineering discipline.
- Typically 5 to 10+ years of electrical engineering experience (those with less could potentially be considered), with demonstrated experience in electrical power-system design and integration for complex power and propulsion applications. Those with more experience may be considered for a more senior level.
- Strong knowledge of several of the following: LV/MV electrical distribution, generators and generator controls, switchboards/switchgear, variable frequency drives, electric propulsion motors, propulsion control systems, Power Management Systems (PMS), protection and coordination, vessel automation/control systems, and hybrid power or energy-storage systems.
- Understanding of power-system operating concepts, including synchronization, load sharing, load shedding, blackout recovery, redundancy, fault response, and degraded operating modes, along with experience developing or interpreting single-line diagrams, control philosophies, functional descriptions, interface documents, equipment specifications, and system calculations.
- Ability and willingness to travel to shipyards, customer sites, FAT facilities, and vessels as needed to support commissioning and sea trials.
- Must meet applicable requirements for work on commercial and government/naval programs, including security-clearance requirements where applicable.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting marine vessels, offshore platforms, naval vessels, or other complex power and propulsion applications, including marine electrical power-system design and integration.
- Experience with system integration, FAT, commissioning, troubleshooting, and/or sea trials.
- Experience with Siemens or comparable industrial drives, PLCs, power management, automation, or marine propulsion systems.
- Experience with engineering and simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, SIMIT, Simcenter Amesim, ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, or similar tools.
- Familiarity with ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s Register, IEC, IEEE, and/or relevant naval or military requirements.
- PE, USCG license, or other relevant professional credentials are a plus but not required.
Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.
