Job description

About this role

As Marqeta's Software Engineer II, you will deliver resilient and sustainable software projects from design to implementation and rollout. You will execute on defined projects to achieve team-level goals and own minor features in support of larger features.

You will independently define the right solutions or use existing approaches to solve defined problems, consistently deliver high quality code, and contribute to test development.

We have three open roles right now within the following teams.

  • Ledger:
  • This team builds and evolves Marqeta's next-generation ledger platform — the system of record for every debit and credit that moves through our card issuing platform. They are responsible for the core money-movement infrastructure that powers Marqeta's business: enforcing balance and completeness guardrails on every transaction, supporting the account and currency structures our customers rely on, and ensuring our ledger meets industry standards required as we scale up-market.
  • Card Issuing:
  • This team owns everything related to the user's card lifecycle, from the moment an account holder is created through card issuance, fulfillment, updates, and expiration. They build and operate the core payments platform services that millions of cards depend on, including Account Holders, Cards, and Account Lifecycle Management (ALM). They also own the services that keep card credentials current across card networks, along with the infrastructure that gets physical cards produced and delivered.
  • Tokenization:
  • This team owns virtual card issuance for 3 leading digital wallet providers: Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay. The team owns and operates the services that enables our cardholders to provision cards into their digital wallets and make subsequent transactions

We work Flexible First . This role can be performed remotely anywhere within the province where you reside, whether that's Ontario, Canada or British Columbia, Canada. We'd love for you to join us!

These positions are for both an existing and not existing vacancy.

The Impact You'll Have

  • Translate ideas into clear, well-documented, well-tested code that contributes to our ledger and money-movement platform
  • Read and navigate a large, complex codebase, and contribute to test development and bug fixing
  • Decompose problems or business scenarios into solutions composed of multiple software components interacting with each other
  • Participate in the core processes of the team such as agile ceremonies, code review sessions, and on-call rotations
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with cross-functional partners and teammates to get work done in a Flex-first environment
  • Ask questions and proactively identify and advocate for ways to improve the current state of projects and processes
  • Contribute to a positive sense of community on the team and support the mentorship of new hires, interns, or more junior engineers

Who You Are

  • Strong Computer Science fundamentals with 2+ years experience as a Backend Software Engineer
  • Programming experience in an Object Oriented language like Java
  • Ability to develop and deliver clean, readable, and error-free code with thorough documentation and testing
  • Ability to understand existing designs and technology choices and make appropriate adjustments when necessary
  • Ability to communicate in a clear, concise, and respectful manner both verbally and in writing
  • The ability to demonstrate humility, empathy, and to take constructive feedback positively
  • A desire to grow in your career by continuously learning new technologies and developing expertise in the payments and ledger domain, and sharing ideas to help others grow and learn
  • The capacity to work productively on cross-functional teams and take a collaborative, team-oriented approach

Nice-To-Haves

  • Experience with Payments, FinTech, or accounting/ledger systems
  • Experience with AWS technologies
  • Experience in end-to-end service ownership model including maintenance of infrastructure and familiarity with IaC technologies, CI/CD, and observability tools (e.g., DataDog)

Typical Process

  • Application Submission
  • Recruiter phone call
  • Hiring manager video call
  • Virtual "Onsite" consisting of 4-5, 45 min calls
  • Offer!
