About this role

We have an opening for a Deputy Program Manager supporting the W80-5 Modernization Program. In this role, you will support the Program Manager in leading complex programmatic activities across the W80-5 program, fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders, and driving successful execution of critical milestones.

As a key leader within the Program Management Office, you will lead Earned Value Management (EVM) for LLNL W80-5 activities and ensure alignment with other sites’ program planning while helping to shape program strategies, ensure operational efficiency, and support the successful execution of a high-impact national security program.

This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), supporting the Strategic Deterrence (SD) Program

Depending on your assignment, this position may offer a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You may have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.

In this role, you will

  • Support the Program Manager and lead the team in executing the W80-5 program across its current and future phases, with emphasis on testing, certification, and production.
  • Oversee programmatic execution, including project management leadership for the overall program, forward financial planning through the Future Years Nuclear Security Program, and execution-year financial guidance and management.
  • Provide program oversight of the monthly reporting process to NNSA: lead program management of execution, review variance analyses, support reviews, and recommend follow-on corrective actions related to the integrated program schedule.
  • Monitor and proactively correct programmatic performance required to meet milestones and deliverables, including accountability for costs, schedules, risks, and execution strategies.
  • Maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment and successful execution of program objectives, interfacing regularly with leadership from LLNL, NNSA, Navy, and sites across the Nuclear Security Enterprise.
  • Deliver high-level briefings and updates to senior management, influencing program direction and decision-making.
  • Identify and implement options to improve efficiency, executability, and program performance.
  • Support the Program Manager by covering activities during scheduling conflicts and providing strategic guidance on program priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • This position requires an active Department of Energy Q-level clearance or an active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of, and experience in, execution of nuclear weapon design, life extension, modernization, systems engineering, requirements management, weapon assessment activities, and product realization processes between design and production agencies.
  • Significant knowledge of applicable NNSA orders, directives, requirements, and program-management processes.
  • Expertise in managing broad program scope including technical, financial, schedule, staffing, risk, and milestone components with a demonstrated record of meeting deadlines and achieving program objectives.
  • Ability to promote and maintain productive relationships across directorates, laboratories, production agencies, NNSA management, Department of Defense organizations, and other external entities across the Nuclear Security Enterprise.
  • Ability to define roles and responsibilities, prioritize activities, and implement strategies that improve operational efficiency and program execution.
  • Ability to present information, explain complex issues, gain cooperation, and advise senior management and external sponsors.
  • Significant leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills necessary to lead teams and projects, provide performance feedback, and actively participate in performance-management activities from a programmatic perspective.

Qualifications

We Desire

  • Significant experience with NNSA NA-125 program execution.
  • Expertise and experience with project-management tools and techniques, including work planning, scheduling, cost estimating, budget management, project-control reporting, variance analysis, and Earned Value Management Systems.
  • Subject Matter Expert-level knowledge of nuclear weapon engineering, nuclear weapon physics, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Ability to act independently under broad direction and exercise trusted judgment in technical, programmatic, and managerial matters.
  • Experience coordinating engineering, programmatic, and product-realization activities across design laboratories, production agencies, plants, and other Nuclear Security Enterprise organizations.
  • Extensive experience sustaining productive relationships with other divisions, directorates, laboratories, plants, NNSA management, Department of Defense organizations, and other institutions across the DOE and DOW enterprise.
