About this role
Schedule: Generally Monday-Friday, during regular business hours
About the role:
Windstar Technologies, Inc. is seeking a Web Designer and Developer to build and maintain client websites, adapt and publish marketing content, and improve website usability and search visibility. You will support a portfolio of approximately 15 existing websites and contribute to new website projects. Most work will involve WordPress and Elementor, along with HTML-based websites and AI-assisted development tools.
This role is open to early-career applicants who can show practical website skills, clear writing, and careful attention to detail. Personal, school, freelance, and volunteer projects are welcome. You will work directly with clients and carry out content and website priorities set by marketing and the CEO.
Marketing resources provide most blog and social content in draft form; your work will emphasize adapting, editing, formatting, and scheduling it, with occasional original writing. Code and production changes follow our review and approval process.
What you will do:
- Design and build responsive WordPress websites, pages, and landing pages using Elementor, approved brand guidelines, and client requirements.
- Maintain existing WordPress and HTML-based websites, updating layouts, navigation, text, images, links, forms, and other content.
- Coordinate WordPress core, theme, plugin, and PHP updates through managed hosting tools and approved maintenance procedures. Check compatibility, document results, and escalate complex errors or unfamiliar code changes.
- Test changes in staging and confirm backup and recovery options before production updates. Check important pages, forms, links, mobile layouts, and integrations after changes, including automated updates.
- Adapt, edit, format, and schedule marketing-supplied blog articles and social media posts for Windstar and selected clients. Check business details, factual claims, links, images, tone, brand consistency, and relevant SEO fields; obtain approval before publication. Write occasional website copy or additional content as needed under the approved strategy and editorial calendar.
- Implement on-page SEO improvements, including page titles, headings, internal links, image optimization, and approved redirects. Monitor website and search performance and recommend practical improvements.
- Apply foundational answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) concepts through useful content, clear page structure, accurate business information, and approved search optimization practices.
- Use approved AI tools to assist with coding, code review, troubleshooting, content, and documentation. Inspect and test changes after AI-assisted review, protect client information, and submit code for CEO review before production changes.
- Improve usability, accessibility, and performance, including readable layouts, keyboard-friendly navigation, appropriate image text alternatives, and efficient images.
- Gather client requirements, explain progress clearly, manage assigned requests, and keep accurate records of changes, testing, approvals, and outstanding issues.
Required qualifications:
- Practical WordPress experience and website samples demonstrating page design, responsive layouts, or useful website improvements. Professional experience is welcome but is not required when relevant project work demonstrates your skills.
- Working knowledge of HTML and CSS, including the ability to edit existing code and troubleshoot common layout problems.
- Basic JavaScript knowledge and familiarity with how WordPress themes, plugins, and PHP affect website behavior. Sound judgment about when additional technical review is needed.
- Clear writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to adapt supplied material into accurate, readable content for its intended audience.
- Foundational understanding of SEO and awareness of how useful, well-structured content supports search and AI-assisted discovery.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools and the ability to explain, check, and test the work produced with them.
- Professional client communication, organization, attention to visual detail, and reliable follow-through on assigned work.
- Ability to work in person in Culpeper, Virginia.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience with Elementor or another WordPress page builder and managed WordPress hosting tools.
- Familiarity with staging, backups, deployments, Git, browser developer tools, and basic PHP troubleshooting.
- Experience with search performance tools, web analytics, structured data, local SEO, or conversion tracking.
- Familiarity with accessibility, performance testing, image editing, or design mockup tools.
- Experience adapting and publishing blog or social content, maintaining an editorial calendar, or tailoring approved messaging for different audiences.
A specific degree or certification is not required. We will evaluate your practical skills, portfolio, writing, and ability to learn.
How to apply
Submit your resume, one or two website examples, and a short writing or edited-content sample. Personal and school projects are acceptable. Briefly describe your contribution to each example and how you used templates, page builders, supplied content, or AI tools.
You may provide screenshots or a demonstration project when client work is confidential.
