About this role

Schedule: Generally Monday-Friday, during regular business hours

On-call: One week at a time, rotating across the team, approximately once per month

About the role:

Windstar Technologies, Inc. provides technology support to business clients across multiple locations and industries. As our Level 3 Engineer, you will resolve complex technical escalations and lead the design and delivery of infrastructure projects, migrations, and system improvements.

You will work with clients and our support team to restore service, address recurring problems, and make systems easier to support. This role combines hands-on engineering, project ownership, and technical mentoring of Level 1 and Level 2 technicians.

What you will do:

  • Own complex escalations involving servers, identity, Microsoft 365, networking, virtualization, storage, and backup systems. Coordinate troubleshooting and service restoration with clients, technicians, and external support teams.
  • Investigate recurring and major incidents, identify contributing causes, and develop practical remediation plans. Track corrective actions and verify that changes resolve the underlying problem.
  • Lead technical design and implementation of infrastructure projects, upgrades, and migrations. Assess requirements, dependencies, risks, and support needs; develop implementation, testing, and rollback plans; and obtain required approvals.
  • Administer and troubleshoot supported Windows Server environments, including Active Directory Domain Services, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, file services, and permissions.
  • Manage Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Entra ID environments, including identity, authentication, access, email, and hybrid connectivity where applicable.
  • Configure and troubleshoot firewalls, switching, routing, VLANs, VPNs, and wireless networks. Apply approved security standards and document configuration changes.
  • Maintain physical and virtual infrastructure, investigate performance and capacity issues, and plan lifecycle upgrades. Validate backup and disaster recovery procedures through documented recovery testing.
  • Use RMM, PSA/ticketing, and documentation platforms to manage work and maintain accurate records. Support infrastructure and security escalations involving AV/EDR, MDR, and SIEM services, coordinating with security specialists when appropriate.
  • Develop, test, document, and maintain PowerShell scripts and other automation that reduce repetitive work or improve reliability. Follow access, credential-handling, and change-control procedures.
  • Maintain useful diagrams, configuration records, procedures, incident findings, and project handoffs. Mentor Level 1 and Level 2 technicians through troubleshooting guidance, technical review, and knowledge sharing.
  • Communicate risks, progress, and next steps clearly. Prioritize work by business impact, urgency, and service commitments, and participate in the on-call rotation described above.

Required qualifications:

  • At least seven years of relevant systems administration, infrastructure engineering, or progressively responsible IT support experience, including advanced troubleshooting of business environments.
  • Strong hands-on experience administering Windows Server, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and file services.
  • Experience administering Microsoft 365 and troubleshooting Microsoft Entra ID, authentication, permissions, and related identity issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve complex network, virtualization, storage, and backup or recovery problems.
  • Experience independently leading infrastructure projects or migrations, including technical design, implementation, validation, documentation, and rollback planning.
  • PowerShell skills sufficient to develop, test, troubleshoot, and maintain administrative scripts safely.
  • Experience using ticketing/PSA, RMM, and IT documentation platforms, with accurate work records and effective management of competing priorities.
  • Clear client communication, strong documentation, sound judgment about technical risk and security, and the ability to coach other technicians.
  • Ability to work in person in Culpeper and participate in the stated on-call rotation.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working for a managed service provider or supporting multiple business client environments.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, endpoint management, shared storage/SAN, high availability, or remote desktop environments.
  • Relevant Microsoft certifications, such as Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Administrator Associate, Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate, or Microsoft Certified: Identity and Access Administrator Associate.
  • Relevant networking certifications, such as Cisco CCNA or CCNP Enterprise.
  • A bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent technical training and practical experience.

Certifications and a degree are preferred. Demonstrated senior technical capability is required.

Physical requirements

Essential duties include occasionally lifting or moving equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, such as servers, UPS units, and printers, with or without reasonable accommodation.

How to apply

Submit your resume highlighting infrastructure environments you have administered, complex incidents you have resolved, and projects or migrations you have led. Include relevant certifications and examples of automation or technical mentoring without sharing confidential client information.
