This is a one‑year, postgraduate, multidisciplinary fellowship designed for Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants seeking advanced training in critical care medicine.

This combined medical and surgical fellowship provides comprehensive exposure across multiple critical care specialties. Fellows develop advanced clinical knowledge and procedural skills while working as an integral member of a multidisciplinary critical care team.

Program Overview

APP fellows work alongside critical care physician teams at University of Iowa Health Care and train in parallel with physician critical care fellows across medical, surgical, and anesthesia programs. Educational experiences include daily patient rounds, structured didactic sessions, hands‑on workshops, and completion of critical care–specific certificate courses.

Throughout the fellowship, APP fellows progressively assume responsibility for patient care under supervision, managing patients they follow as part of the critical care team.
