We’re seeking a Senior Backend Java Developer to support mission-critical systems at the Largest Federal Enterprise in Woodlawn, MD. This is an on-site role with outstanding contractor pay and the kind of long-term stability this opportunity is known for.

Key Responsibilities
Java/Spring Boot development for large-scale backend systems
Build and maintain RESTful APIs supporting millions of transactions
Modernize legacy systems into scalable, cloud-ready architectures
Collaborate with architects, product owners, and federal stakeholders
Ensure performance, security, and reliability across all backend services
Cloud Platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
Understanding how backend services interact with cloud infrastructure:
IAM roles/permissions
VPC, subnets, security groups, firewalls
Load balancers, API gateways
Cloud-native event & messaging systems (e.g., AWS SNS/SQS, Kafka, Pub/Sub)
2. Networking & Infrastructure Concepts
HTTP/TCP basics, DNS, routing
SSL/TLS, certificate management
Service discovery
Reverse proxies (NGINX, Envoy)
3. DevOps & Deployment
Infrastructure-aware backend developers should know:
Docker fundamentals (images, layers, networking)
Kubernetes basics (deployment, config maps, services)
CI/CD concepts (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab)
4. Observability & Reliability
Integration often means making services discoverable, measurable, and debuggable:
Logging frameworks (Logback, SLF4J)
Metrics (Micrometer + Prometheus)
Distributed tracing (OpenTelemetry, Jaeger, Zipkin)
Health checks and readiness probes
5. Messaging & Integration Technologies
Apache Kafka (topic design, consumer groups)
RabbitMQ or other AMQP brokers
JMS for legacy systems
Webhooks and event-driven integration patterns
6. Security & Compliance
Infrastructure integration is heavily tied to secure communication:
OAuth2 / OIDC
JWT management
Secrets management (Vault, AWS Secrets Manager)
API rate limiting, throttling, circuit breakers
7. Infrastructure-as-Code (optional but valuable)
Not required for all roles, but increasingly helpful:
Terraform basics
Helm basics for Kubernetes packaging
Required Skills:
8+ years backend engineering experience
Expert-level Java, Spring Boot, REST API development
Strong microservices and distributed systems experience
SQL/NoSQL, CI/CD, containerization
Ability to work on-site in Woodlawn, MD
Bachelor’s degree
Preferred:
Prior federal agency experience (SSA, CMS, DHS, USDA, etc.)
AWS, Kafka, OpenShift
