About this role

Position Summary:

We are looking for a motivated, detail-oriented Entry-Level Truss Designer to join our growing team. This position is ideal for individuals with a passion for structural design and an eagerness to learn. Under the guidance of experienced truss designers and engineers, you will use Alpine software to develop truss layouts for a variety of residential, commercial, and light industrial projects.

This is a great opportunity for those starting their career in drafting or design, even with limited prior experience.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Design Support: Assist in designing and drafting wood truss systems using Alpine software based on architectural and engineering plans.
  • Blueprint Reading: Interpret construction documents including blueprints, structural drawings, and architectural layouts to determine truss specifications.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with senior designers, engineers, and production staff to ensure accurate, code-compliant designs.
  • Load Calculations: Perform basic span, load, and material calculations with guidance from senior staff.
  • Documentation: Generate detailed truss drawings, material takeoffs, and production files for use in manufacturing and on-site construction.
  • Code Compliance: Ensure all designs meet local building codes and internal quality standards, with oversight and review from experienced team members.
  • Training & Development: Participate in company-sponsored training to improve design skills, software proficiency, and understanding of structural systems.
  • Communication: Coordinate with internal teams to clarify project requirements and resolve design issues as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or GED required. Coursework or an associate degree in drafting, architecture, construction technology, or engineering is helpful but not required.
  • Experience: No prior work experience necessary. Familiarity with drafting concepts or design software (via coursework, internships, or personal projects) is a plus.
  • Technical Aptitude: Interest in learning structural software (such as Alpine) and design principles.
  • Basic Understanding: Familiarity with geometry, construction terminology, and structural concepts is an advantage.
  • Software Skills: Comfortable with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and open to learning new platforms.

Core Competencies:

  • Attention to Detail: Strong focus on accuracy and completeness in all design work.
  • Problem Solving: Ability to troubleshoot basic design issues with support.
  • Team-Oriented: Works well within a team and takes direction positively.
  • Time Management: Manages multiple tasks efficiently and meets deadlines.
  • Communication Skills: Clear and respectful verbal and written communication.
  • Adaptability: Willingness to learn new tools, standards, and construction practices.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sit for long periods at a desk – 8 hours or more.
  • Lift and move up to 25 pounds. Communicate and hear, both in person and by telephone or Zoom.
  • Use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls.
  • Reach with hands and arms.
  • Possess close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
