About this role
About the Role
Shulman & Hill, PLLC is a New York plaintiff's personal injury firm with offices across multiple boroughs. We represent people injured in motor vehicle accidents, on unsafe premises, on construction sites, and in catastrophic and wrongful death matters.
We are hiring a Litigation Associate with 2 to 4 years of experience to join our Manhattan office. You will handle motor vehicle and premises liability cases in suit, from discovery through settlement, and report directly to a partner.
This is a full-time, in-office role for an attorney who wants real responsibility: negotiating and settling your own cases, taking and defending depositions, appearing in court, and drafting motions.
Key Responsibilities
Case management
- Manage an active litigation caseload of motor vehicle and premises liability matters
- Draft pleadings, bills of particulars, discovery demands, and responses under the CPLR
- Track court deadlines, compliance conference orders, and note of issue dates
- Work with paralegals to keep files current, organized, and trial ready
Depositions
- Prepare clients for and defend their depositions
- Take depositions of defendants, witnesses, and non-party witnesses
Court appearances
- Appear at preliminary, compliance, and pre-trial conferences
- Argue discovery and dispositive motions
- Represent clients at mediations and settlement conferences
Motion practice
- Draft and oppose summary judgment motions, including on liability and the serious injury threshold under Insurance Law §5102(d)
- Draft and oppose motions to compel, preclude, and strike
- Research and write memoranda of law on liability, damages, and procedural issues
Settlement
- Evaluate case value and develop a resolution strategy for each file
- Prepare settlement demands and negotiate directly with insurance carriers and defense counsel
- Settle cases within firm-approved authority and recommend settlements above it to the partner
- Coordinate lien resolution and work with the closing department to finalize settlements
Trial readiness
- Keep files trial ready, including exhibits, witness outlines, and expert coordination
- Support trial counsel on matters that proceed to trial
Qualifications
Required
- J.D. and admission to the New York State Bar, in good standing
- 2 to 4 years of New York personal injury litigation experience, plaintiff or defense
- Experience taking and defending depositions
- Experience appearing in New York State Supreme Court
- Strong legal research and writing skills, with motion practice experience
- Working knowledge of the CPLR and New York motor vehicle and premises liability law
Preferred
- Plaintiff-side experience
- Experience drafting or opposing serious injury threshold motions
- A track record of negotiating bodily injury settlements with carriers
- Familiarity with Litify or another Salesforce-based case management system
