About this role
Software Engineer: Custom Software Builds (Project-Based, Remote)
Compensation: Pay Per Project
About Runtools:
Runtools builds custom AI automations and software for small professional services businesses, such as law firms, accounting practices, agencies and consultancies. We help them cut down on manual work and run more efficiently with tools built for how they actually operate.
The Role
We're looking for engineers to take on client projects as they come in. When our sales team closes a deal, you'll get a clear project brief and build the solution: an AI workflow, an integration between tools, a custom internal app or a mobile app. You pick the projects that fit your skills and schedule.
What You'll Do
- Review project briefs and scope the technical approach, timeline and effort
- Build AI automations, integrations, custom software and iOS/Android apps for professional services clients
- Connect client tools such as CRMs, email, document storage, scheduling and practice management software through APIs
- Troubleshoot and fix bugs and other problems customers run into with their builds
- Work through assigned Linear tickets and keep their status up to date
- Communicate with team members on Slack, and work with our client-facing team to clarify requirements and share progress updates
- Test, deploy and hand off finished builds, with clear documentation
What We're Looking For:
- Solid experience building software, whether through professional work, freelance projects or a strong portfolio
- Hands-on experience with LLM APIs (such as Claude or OpenAI) and building AI-powered workflows
- Comfortable with APIs, webhooks and third-party integrations
- Comfortable developing iOS and Android apps, whether native or cross-platform (such as React Native or Flutter)
- Able to work independently, manage your own time and deliver on schedule
- Clear written communication and good judgment about when to ask questions
Preferred (Not Required):
- Experience with automation platforms such as n8n, Make or Zapier
- Background building tools for small businesses or professional services firms
- Previous freelance or agency experience
Why Join:
- Flexible, project-based work that fits around your schedule
- Steady flow of projects, with no need to find your own clients
- Varied, practical AI builds that make a real difference for businesses
To Apply: Send your resume or portfolio, links to relevant projects (GitHub, live builds or case studies) and a short note about your experience with AI and automation to [email protected].
