About this role

Embedded Systems Engineer

Salt Lake City, UT - onsite

$130-160K/year

About the Role

We are seeking an Embedded Systems Engineer to help develop and evolve the embedded software and firmware for a next-generation hardware and sensing platform. This role focuses on integrating cameras, sensors, illumination systems, and other hardware components into a reliable, high-performance device.

You will work across firmware, embedded Linux, hardware integration, and data acquisition, helping bring new capabilities from early prototypes through production deployment. The ideal candidate enjoys hands-on engineering, debugging complex hardware/software interactions, and building systems that operate reliably in real-world environments.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain embedded software and firmware for a hardware-based sensing platform.
  • Develop device-side software to control cameras, sensors, illumination systems, and peripheral hardware.
  • Integrate hardware components using interfaces such as UART, I2C, SPI, GPIO, RS-485, CAN, and Modbus.
  • Develop and debug software running on embedded Linux systems.
  • Support hardware bring-up, prototype development, system integration, and troubleshooting.
  • Work with signal processing, image acquisition, and sensor data pipelines to ensure reliable data capture.
  • Diagnose issues involving hardware, firmware, drivers, communications, and system performance.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, software, and product engineering teams to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Improve system reliability, performance, and maintainability as products transition from prototypes to production.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in embedded systems engineering, firmware development, or a related discipline.
  • Strong programming experience in C or C++, with Python experience preferred.
  • Experience developing software for embedded Linux or Linux-based hardware platforms.
  • Familiarity with hardware communication protocols such as UART, I2C, SPI, GPIO, RS-485, CAN, or Modbus.
  • Experience with hardware integration, debugging, and laboratory testing.
  • Understanding of device drivers, peripheral control, and hardware/software interfaces.
  • Experience working with cameras, sensors, image acquisition, or signal processing is a plus.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex technical problems across hardware and software boundaries.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work across multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience bringing embedded products from prototype to production.
  • Familiarity with camera systems, optical sensors, or machine-vision hardware.
  • Experience with real-time systems, hardware timing, or synchronization of multiple devices.
  • Experience with automated testing, system diagnostics, and performance optimization.
  • Comfortable working in a hands-on engineering environment involving physical hardware and laboratory testing.
