Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Quality and Technical group, the purpose of the Head of Data Science and Machine Learning role is to develop and execute the data innovation strategy pillar within the PCC Metals and Forgings Technology Function. The role requires skills in machine learning, artificial intelligence, computational methods, and advanced data modeling as it applies to the manufacturing processes and products.
This role will be instrumental in supporting the segment strategy by providing a critical combination of advanced data analytics and statistical approaches, data mining and extraction expertise.
This is a key role to set standards, train and otherwise aid in acquisition of these critical skills for the business and thus, to drive the programs that establish links between processing variables and key quality outcomes that underpin business metrics.
This position involves working alongside a diverse team of manufacturing technology, product and process engineers and technicians on projects that require the development of digital twins and advanced analytics such as convoluted neural networks, multivariant statistical analysis and artificial intelligence-based pattern recognition tools, ensuring that solutions are implemented at pace from concept to production.
The Head of Data Science and AI will be a key member of the mentorship and leadership team responsible for coaching and steering the engineering teams in the overarching PCC Industry 4.0 initiative. At this level, the individual will be expected to be able to work independently and provide clear recommendations to technical staff.
This Head of Data Science and AI is expected to both lead and participate in multidisciplinary teams to provide financial return for the PCC Metals and Forgings segment.
key responsibilities
o Support the segment strategy by providing data science, machine learning, and digital twin expertise to the linkage between processing variables and key outcomes.
o Develop and execute data innovation strategy within the PCC Metals and Forgings Technology Function.
o Accountability for delivery of select strategic projects that deliver meaningful financial returns to the business is central to the role, including setting the standards around data analytics, statistical approaches, and data mining.
o Co-develop and lead data pipelines, data mining, machine learning, artificial intelligence and/or data modeling plans to support model line projects and data programs.
o Direct Industry 4.0 initiatives from pilot scale demonstrations through scale-up into capital projects.
o Develop and direct automation and digitalization projects to support plant initiatives.
o Image analysis and development of deep learning for streamlining analysis.
o Ensure that all analyses are performed in accordance with good statistical practice and applicable regulatory requirements
o Leverage experience and systems thinking skills to lead and mentor automation and modeling engineers engaged in the Industry 4.0 initiative
o Drive shop floor digitization with a focus on data extraction and related analytics and process modeling to support operations, PCC Metals and Forgings Production Systems, key process control parameters and other CI initiatives

Competencies
o Demonstrable capability to develop/modify programing scripts to automate routine/manual processes including for example Excel, Matlab/Mathcad, python
o Finite element modeling experience and demonstrated application
o Knowledge and practical experience preferred in advanced software such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras
o Demonstrated ability to use systems engineering thinking to solve complex problems
o Demonstrated written and verbal communication capabilities – ability to effectively collaborate with other technical as well as non-technical personnel to move projects forward
o Demonstrated systems thinking skills and competencies
o Ability to work in internal and external teams.
o Highly motivated, independent, attention to detail
Education and Experience
o MS or PhD in Materials Science (preferred) or another closely related engineering discipline
o 10+ years of experience

Work Environment –
Remote working is OK for this role. Travel will be expected to PCC Metals plants.

For informational purposes only, the range of pay for this role is $135,000 to $155,000 US Dollar (USD) Salaried based on a variety of factors.
For informational purposes only, this role is eligible to participate in the Company’s Quarterly Cash Bonus Plan, paid out at the quarterly bonus factor of 2.5X the Company’s bonus multiple, based on the Company’s performance in the applicable quarter. Employees will receive 120 hours paid time off every year. Employees will also receive 10 paid holidays.
