About this role

Pediatric Occupational Therapist (OT)

Location: Newport News, VA Position Type: Part-Time / 1099 Independent Contractor Compensation: $50.00 per hour Schedule: Flexible with opportunity to increase hours

Come Grow With Us!

Mindful Communication Group (MCG) is expanding our pediatric therapy services in Newport News, and we're looking for a Pediatric Occupational Therapist to join our growing team.

We are a therapist-owned, multidisciplinary practice built by two clinicians who understand the realities of clinical work. We believe great care starts with clinicians who feel respected, supported, and trusted to do their jobs well.

This opportunity is ideal for an OT who wants flexibility, professional autonomy and a supportive team environment.

Why MCG?

Therapist-Owned & Clinician-Centered

MCG is owned and led by two licensed clinicians. We understand caseload demands, documentation, work-life balance, and the importance of having autonomy in your clinical work.

Flexible Schedule

Create availability that works for your life. Start with a manageable schedule and have the opportunity to increase your hours.

Multidisciplinary Team

Be part of a multidisciplinary practice that brings together Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Mental Health Counseling, and Child & Play Therapy. Our team supports children and families across multiple areas of development and well-being, creating opportunities for professional collaboration and coordinated care when clinically appropriate.

Grow With Our Pediatric Services

Join MCG at an exciting time as we expand our pediatric therapy services. As our Occupational Therapy caseload grows, you'll have the opportunity to grow your hours based on your interests and availability, while focusing on what you do best: providing quality care to children and families.

Therapy Materials & Equipment

We want our clinicians to have the resources they need to provide quality care. You will have access to therapy materials and equipment to support your clinical work, with opportunities to provide input on additional resources that would benefit the children you serve.

Clinical Autonomy

We value your professional judgment. You will have the autonomy to evaluate, develop treatment plans, establish functional goals, and make clinical recommendations within your professional scope, clinical competencies, and applicable practice requirements.

MCG Team Perks

We believe supporting great clinicians means investing in both professional growth and personal well-being. MCG Team Perks are designed to support continued learning, wellness, connection, and a sustainable clinical experience.

Eligible MCG clinicians have access to:

  • Annual Wellness Benefit – toward eligible wellness expenses
  • Professional Development Assistance – eligible continuing education and professional development expenses
  • Virginia OT License Renewal Reimbursement
  • Quarterly Team Wellness & Connection Opportunities – optional opportunities to connect, recharge, and enjoy time with the MCG team
  • Access to relevant trainings and professional development opportunities offered through MCG

What You Will Do

As a Pediatric Occupational Therapist at MCG, you will provide occupational therapy evaluations and interventions to help children participate more successfully in the activities and routines that are meaningful to their everyday lives.

Your clinical work may include:

  • Conducting comprehensive pediatric occupational therapy evaluations and re-evaluations using clinical observation, caregiver interview, standardized or criterion-referenced measures, and other appropriate assessment methods
  • Assessing how sensory, motor, visual-motor, fine motor, self-care, and other functional skills affect a child's participation in daily activities and routines
  • Developing individualized plans of care with measurable, functional goals based on evaluation findings, family priorities, and the child's occupational performance needs
  • Providing evidence-based, developmentally appropriate interventions addressing areas such as fine motor skills, visual-motor integration, motor planning, sensory processing and regulation, self-care, and activities of daily living
  • Providing caregiver education, coaching, home strategies, and recommendations to support carryover of skills beyond the therapy setting
  • Monitoring progress and modifying intervention plans, goals, frequency, and recommendations based on the child's response to treatment and changing needs
  • Completing timely, clinically appropriate documentation reflecting skilled OT intervention, client response, progress, and ongoing medical necessity
  • Communicating and collaborating with caregivers, physicians, schools, and other professionals involved in the child's care when clinically appropriate
  • Collaborating with MCG's Speech Therapy, Mental Health, and Child & Play Therapy clinicians when a child's needs cross disciplines or coordinated care would support functional outcomes
  • Identifying when a child's needs fall outside the OT's scope or competency and making appropriate recommendations or referrals

What We Are Looking For

  • Master's Degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program
  • Active and unrestricted Virginia Occupational Therapist license
  • Professional liability insurance
  • Pediatric experience
  • Ability to independently evaluate and treat pediatric clients
  • Strong clinical reasoning, communication, and documentation skills
  • Ability to successfully complete required background screening and onboarding

Experience in pediatric outpatient therapy, sensory processing and regulation, fine motor and visual-motor intervention, developmental disabilities, autism, ADHD, and caregiver education is especially welcome.
