About this role
Position - Unmanned Aircraft Systems Engineer
Asylon’s Robotic’s Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Engineer focuses on modifying the Guardian architecture to support variant airframes, and new payload integrations, custom mission requirements. The UAS Engineer will drive the adaptation, tuning, and long-term evolution of our flight software and control systems across a growing portfolio of derivative uncrewed aircraft platforms.
The ideal candidate possesses deep expertise in ArduPilot, hands-on control loop tuning, flight log analytics, SLAM, localization, perception, rapid adaptation of control and navigation algorithms, and MOC to the upcoming Part 108 BVLOS regulations.
Primary duties include:
- System Architecture & Requirements: Define, document, and manage system and subsystem-level requirements, interface control documents (ICDs), and functional architectures for the Guardian systems.
- Control Systems Engineering: Develop and tune linear and non-linear control algorithms and state estimators for guidance, navigation, and controls of the Guardian systems.
- Cross-Disciplinary Integration: Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, firmware, and software engineering teams to ensure seamless integration.
- Systems Integration & Hardware-in-the-Loop (HITL): Lead the integration of sensors with flight hardware. Build and maintain SIL (Software-in-the-Loop) and HIL simulation environments.
- Verification & Validation (V&V): Plan and execute system-level testing, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, safety testing, Part 108 compliance flight testing, and edge-case validation across simulated and physical environments.
- Field & Operational Readiness: Lead root-cause analysis on complex multi-disciplinary system failures during field deployments and support continuous fleet reliability improvements.
Required Skills and Experience:
· Bachelor or Masters degree in Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
· 3+ years of professional experience as a UAS engineer working with ArduPilot firmware and the MAVLink protocol.
· Solid understanding of classical and modern (state-space, Kalman filtering, state estimation) control methods.
· Strong ability to read schematics, mechanical drawings, and C++/Python code.
· Experience integrating sensors (LiDAR, cameras, IMUs, encoders) with compute architectures and industrial bus standards
· Experience taking aircraft from bench test to field operations, including parameter tuning and flight log analysis.
· Able to work in the Asylon headquarters
Physical Requirements:
This role requires regular, in-person work at an outdoor test facility, collaborating directly with the test team during active testing, including but not limited to:
· Ability to traverse approximately 600 ft each way to the test cell, including uphill and uneven terrain
· Ability to stand and remain on-site outdoors for extended periods (up to 3 hours at a time) during test sessions
· Ability to work in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, wind, precipitation) as dictated by test schedules
· Occasionally required to lift/carry test equipment, laptops, or field gear (up to 20 lbs)
Preferred Qualifications:
· Familiarity with BVLOS m:N operations and FAA Part 107/108 regulations
· Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools
· Practical knowledge of vehicle communications and embedded Linux platforms
· Proficient in writing Python and C++ code
· Understanding of functional safety standards and risk assessment methodologies
FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate or pilot flight experience
