Job description

About this role

Position - Robotic Systems Engineer

Asylon’s Robotic Systems Engineer serve as the bridge between hardware, software, controls, and operations. In this role, you will take a wholistic view of our autonomous ground robotics platforms—from initial requirement definition and system architecture down to hardware-software integration, verification, and field deployment.

You will define system-level requirements, evaluate complex core ground robotics pipelines (such as SLAM, localization, perception, and motion planning), manage subsystem interfaces, and lead system integration and validation activities to ensure our robots perform safely, reliably, and efficiently in real-world environments.

Primary duties include:

  • System Architecture & Requirements: Define, document, and manage system and subsystem-level requirements, interface control documents (ICDs), and functional architectures for complex robotic systems.
  • Autonomous Pipeline Architecture: Evaluate and optimize high-level autonomy pipelines, ensuring proper integration and interface boundaries between SLAM, localization, perception, path planning, and low-level control systems.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Integration: Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, firmware, and software engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of components (actuators, sensors, compute platforms, power distribution, and software stacks).
  • System Trade Studies: Conduct trade studies, feasibility analyses, and risk assessments to evaluate hardware/software components, sensor suits, compute architectures, and communication protocols.
  • Verification & Validation (V&V): Plan and execute system-level testing, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, safety testing, and edge-case validation across simulated and physical environments.
  • Field & Operational Readiness: Lead root-cause analysis on complex multi-disciplinary system failures during field deployments and support continuous fleet reliability improvements.
  • Lifecycle Management: Oversee system lifecycle processes from concept development and prototyping to mass production, deployment, and ongoing telemetry analysis.

Required Skills and Experience:

· Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.

· 3+ years of professional experience as a Systems Engineer or Integration Engineer in robotics, autonomous vehicles, aerospace, or complex electromechanical systems.

· Hands-on experience with systems engineering best practices (requirements management, V-model development, functional block diagrams, failure modes analysis).

· Strong ability to read schematics, mechanical drawings, and C++/Python code.

· Experience integrating sensors (LiDAR, cameras, IMUs, encoders) with compute architectures and industrial bus standards

· Experience developing test plans, automated V&V scripts, and diagnostic tools

· Able to work in the Asylon headquarters

Physical Requirements:

This role requires regular, in-person work at an outdoor test facility, collaborating directly with the test team during active testing, including but not limited to:

· Ability to traverse approximately 600 ft each way to the test cell, including uphill and uneven terrain

· Ability to stand and remain on-site outdoors for extended periods (up to 3 hours at a time) during test sessions

· Ability to work in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, wind, precipitation) as dictated by test schedules

· Occasionally required to lift/carry test equipment, laptops, or field gear (up to 20 lbs)

Preferred Qualifications:

· Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools

· Proficient in writing Python and C++ code

· Understanding of functional safety standards and risk assessment methodologies

· Familiarity with power management, thermal analysis, and embedded systems architecture

· Experience in rapid prototyping and bringing a robotic product from concept to production.

Pay: $90,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year

Benefits:

  • 401(k)
  • Dental insurance
  • Health insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Vision insurance

Application Question(s):

  • Are you a U.S. Person as defined by 22 C.F.R. §120.62. This includes U.S. Citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, or asylees. Yes or No

Ability to Commute:

  • Norristown, PA 19401 (Required)
