Job description

About this role

Apera is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to support the design, development, integration, and verification of embedded real-time software for advanced aerospace and defense electromechanical systems.

This is a hands-on software engineering opportunity focused on developing reliable embedded applications that interact with physical hardware, including sensors, actuators, motors, and electrical systems. The engineer will work across the full software development lifecycle, collaborating with electrical, mechanical, systems, and software engineering teams.

This is a 12-month contract position with a hybrid schedule requiring one week onsite per month and remote work for the remaining weeks.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Design, develop, test, integrate, verify, document, and maintain embedded real-time application software.
  • Translate system, customer, and software requirements into reliable, testable software solutions.
  • Support hardware/software integration involving sensors, actuators, motors, electrical hardware, and associated system interfaces.
  • Troubleshoot embedded software and hardware interactions, investigate software anomalies, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
  • Develop and execute software verification activities to demonstrate compliance with defined system and software requirements.
  • Analyze test results, document findings, and support resolution of technical issues during development, integration, production, and field support.
  • Develop and maintain software requirements, design descriptions, interface documentation, technical analyses, and verification records.
  • Participate in design reviews, code reviews, configuration management, change control, and software release activities.
  • Interpret electrical schematics, interface control documents (ICDs), and engineering specifications.
  • Collaborate with engineering, program management, production, and quality teams to resolve technical risks and support project objectives.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM discipline with a minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience, or an advanced degree in a related field.
  • Experience in embedded software development, real-time applications, software integration, verification, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Working knowledge of the software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, software design, implementation, integration, testing, verification, and configuration management.
  • Demonstrated ability to investigate complex technical problems, troubleshoot software issues, and support integration activities.
  • Ability to communicate technical information and collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Ability to manage assigned engineering priorities and meet established project schedules.
  • U.S. citizenship is required and No Sponsorship or Visas

Preferred Technical Experience

Embedded Software and Computing Platforms

  • Development of embedded real-time software for microcontrollers, processors, or similar embedded computing platforms.
  • Hands-on software integration, debugging, and verification on embedded hardware.

Sensor Interfaces and Motor Controls

  • Design, implementation, integration, and debugging of sensor interfaces, including analog-to-digital conversion (ADC).
  • Embedded software for brushless DC (BLDC) motor-control applications.
  • Resolver interfaces and motor-position feedback.
  • Integration of software with electrical, electronic, and electromechanical systems.

Engineering Tools and Development Practices

  • MATLAB/Simulink or comparable model-based software development tools.
  • IBM Engineering Requirements Management DOORS or similar requirements-management tools.
  • Source control, issue tracking, code reviews, and continuous integration.
  • Interpretation of electrical schematics, ICDs, and other engineering drawings.

Aerospace and Software Verification

  • Aerospace, defense, or other safety-critical product development.
  • DO-178/DO-178C software development and verification environments.
  • Requirements-based testing, verification, traceability, configuration management, and problem-reporting processes.
  • Laboratory-based hardware/software troubleshooting using debugging equipment or test environments.
  • Formal engineering reviews and structured product development processes.

The Experience We're Looking For

We're especially interested in engineers who have directly contributed to embedded software development and can explain the software they've implemented, the hardware it interfaces with, and how they tested, debugged, and verified its functionality.

This position is focused on embedded software engineering rather than general web development, cloud/backend software, or systems engineering without relevant software development or integration experience.
