What's Exciting About the Role
As Merchant Monitoring & Ongoing Due Diligence (ODD) Analyst, you keep our existing merchant portfolio compliant with the applicable AML/CTF frameworks (GwG, Wwft, MLR 2017, FIN-FSA AML Act, EBA guidelines) and internal group risk appetite.
You review, refresh and re-assess merchant files on a risk-based cycle, act on trigger events from monitoring signals, and make well-documented decisions on continuation, remediation or exit – all under a single group standard applied across entities.
Merchant Monitoring & ODD is being built out as a dedicated capability within the group. This role is deliberately designed with a growth path: strong performers will have the opportunity to grow into the Team Lead Merchant Monitoring & ODD position as the function scales.
Key Responsibilities
- Periodic reviews: Execute risk-based re-underwriting cycles (low / medium / high / EDD) across the group merchant portfolio, applying the entity-specific policy that governs each merchant (BaFin / DNB / FCA / FIN-FSA) on top of the common group standard.
- Trigger-based reviews: Handle event-driven reviews originating from transaction monitoring (Featurespace / IBM Safer Payments), adverse media, sanctions or PEP hits, UBO or legal-form changes, chargeback spikes and scheme notifications.
- KYC / KYB refresh: Re-verify legal entity data, UBO structures, control persons, licensing, PoA and business model; refresh IDs, register extracts and financials; document sources and gaps.
- Screening & investigations: Clear sanctions, PEP and adverse media alerts; conduct open-source and register-based investigations; escalate confirmed matches to the MLRO / 2nd Line.
- Enhanced due diligence: Build EDD files for high-risk merchants (high-risk industries, complex ownership, offshore nexus, cash-intensive business), including SoW/SoF where relevant.
- Risk decisions: Recommend continuation, remediation actions, restrictions or off-boarding; draft clear rationales that hold up in internal audit, external audit (Grant Thornton, fscom, Forvis Mazars) and supervisory review by any of the group’s regulators (BaFin, DNB, FCA, FIN-FSA).
- Quality & controls: Follow the 4-eyes principle, maintain complete audit trails in the KYC case management tool (Sumsub and internal systems) and contribute to sample selection for internal QA.
- Cross-functional work: Interface with Onboarding, Credit Risk, Fraud, AML/Compliance (2nd Line MLROs across entities), Sales and Merchant Support; support group regulatory projects (DORA/ZAIT remediation, DNB and BaFin submissions, FCA / FIN-FSA responses) where re-underwriting evidence is required.
Skills and Experience
We Desire
- Experience: 3–7 years of hands-on KYC/KYB experience in a payment institution, acquirer, PSP, e-money institution or bank; demonstrable ownership of periodic reviews and EDD, not only onboarding.
- Regulatory knowledge: Solid working knowledge of at least one European AML/CTF framework (GwG, Wwft, MLR 2017, FIN-FSA AML Act or equivalent) and card scheme rules (Visa, Mastercard); readiness to apply the group standard across entities. Familiarity with EBA ML/TF risk factor guidelines expected; BaFin AuA, DNB Wwft guidance or FCA FCG are all valued.
- Risk mindset: Able to form and defend a risk view on complex merchant structures – holding companies, nominee arrangements, marketplaces, PayFac and high-risk MCCs.
- Tools: Comfortable with KYC platforms (e.g. Sumsub, LexisNexis, Dow Jones, World-Check), transaction monitoring systems and standard investigative sources (Handelsregister, Companies House, KVK, OpenCorporates).
- Language: Business-fluent English (written and spoken) is mandatory – used daily with merchants, auditors and internal stakeholders across EMEA. German or Dutch is a strong plus given the DE / NL portfolio focus.
- Delivery: Structured, evidence-driven, concise in writing; able to work through a queue with clear SLAs without losing quality.
- Nice to have: CAMS, ICA or comparable certification; exposure to DNB, FCA or FIN-FSA supervised entities; experience supporting external audits or supervisory inspections.
