Sr. Director - Software Engineering

About the Role

Slack is looking for a Sr. Director of Engineering to lead a high-impact engineering organization within our platform. This leader will own technical strategy, execution, and team health for Slack, partnering closely with Product, Design, and cross-functional engineering leadership to deliver reliable, scalable, and delightful experiences for millions of users.

What You'll Do

• Own end-to-end delivery for your engineering org from technical roadmap and architecture decisions to execution and operational excellence.
• Build, mentor, and scale a team of engineering managers and senior ICs; set a high bar for technical talent and inclusive leadership.
• Partner with Product and Design leadership to translate business priorities into technical strategy and roadmaps.
• Drive engineering rigor: code quality, system reliability, security, and scalability across your area.
• Represent your organization in cross-Slack and cross-Salesforce planning, influencing broader technical direction.
• Manage budget, headcount planning, and org design for your team.
• Foster a culture of accountability, psychological safety, and continuous improvement.

What We're Looking For

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years in engineering leadership roles managing managers.
• Proven track record leading large-scale, distributed systems at consumer or enterprise SaaS scale.
• Strong technical judgment: able to go deep on architecture and design when needed, while empowering teams to own execution.
• Experience partnering with Product/Design at the executive level to shape roadmap and strategy.
• Demonstrated success building and scaling high-performing, diverse engineering teams.
• Excellent communication skills; comfortable operating with ambiguity and driving clarity for others.
