About the role
Slack is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to own Android accessibility across the app — from Slack Kit component-level fixes to platform-wide screen reader, testing, and compliance strategy. You’ll be the primary technical owner of Android a11y, working closely with the iOS/mobile accessibility team, design systems, and feature teams to make Slack usable for everyone.
What you’ll do
- Drive accessibility for Slack Kit Compose components — audit and fix issues, and build/maintain snapshot and automated a11y testing.
- Diagnose and fix TalkBack/framework issues and generalize fixes into shared utilities other teams can adopt.
- Own and evolve Android a11y test suites and infrastructure, including custom tooling and third-party integrations for automated UI-test coverage.
- Provide accessibility guidance to feature teams on complex UI work — labeling, focus order, state announcements, and audible feedback for interactive actions.
- Lead VPAT compliance efforts: triage and resolve related tickets, group recurring issues into epics, and clearly document Slack’s compliance posture.
- Plan and run accessibility testing across major features and partner with QA vendors on regression testing.
- Represent Android in cross-platform mobile accessibility planning, coordinating with iOS counterparts, design systems, and feature teams
- Mentor Android engineers on accessibility best practices, run onboarding sessions, and share knowledge broadly (docs, newsletters, external talks).
What we’re looking for
- 5+ years Android engineering experience, including Kotlin and Jetpack Compose in a team environment
- Hands-on expertise with Android accessibility APIs and TalkBack behavior.
- Experience building or maintaining accessibility testing infrastructure.
- Familiarity with accessibility compliance frameworks (e.g. WCAG, VPAT) and experience driving compliance work end-to-end.
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills — you’ll work with design systems, iOS and feature teams regularly.
Nice to have
- Experience with design systems / component libraries and accessibility standards.
- Familiarity with third-party accessibility auditing tools or building custom static-analysis/scanning tools.
- Public speaking or writing on accessibility topics.
- Experience using Slack and a keen interest in making it better
