About this role

Employer-provided description, formatted for easier reading.

Slack on mobile is used by millions of people every week.

The Core Mobile team is a product engineering team in the SlackXP pillar. The humans here are focused on making Slack the best place to get work done on the go.

We’re looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead our Noise & Intelligence pod. You'll manage a globally distributed, multidisciplinary team of iOS and Android engineers owning a problem rather than a backlog. The Noise & Intelligence pod help people parse signal from noise and know what they need to do next.

We make sure that when Slack's asks for attention it's trustworthy, build the assistive layer that surfaces what matters and helps users action on them effectively.

We’re looking for a smart, humble and collaborative leader who’s passionate about making a best in class mobile experience and who understands how to drive their engineers and work with their cross-functional partners to turn that passion into something tangible users hold in their hands.

What You'll Actually Be Doing

  • Being enough of an SME across the pod's span to say where this problem space should go: what to invest in now, what to sequence later, what to decline.
  • Owning the culture of their team and building a high-trust environment that allows the engineers to do impactful work and grow themselves and each other technically.
  • Partnering with PMs and Designers on planning, dependencies, timelines and risks and being the shortest path to solutions.
  • Setting a bar high for execution, defining measures for quality across both platforms, driving the team to make data-driven investments and ensuring that security, accessibility and performance are built into the very fabric of how the team works.
  • Hiring well, representing your team's work in the rooms where priorities get argued, as well as building a deep understanding of your engineer's work such that you can help them grow their impact.
  • Working in the open, and telling your leadership what's really going on early enough that nothing becomes a fire drill.

You're Our Person If…

  • You’ve led engineering teams for 4+ years building high performance web or mobile applications.
  • You have strong software engineering fundamentals with previous experience as a Senior+ iOS or Android engineer with enough depth to be credible in architecture discussions and to build SME knowledge in a new area fast.
  • Experience managing engineers across a wide time-zone gap, with an async rhythm that doesn't depend on overlap hours.
  • An understanding of how and where AI software development tooling can be deployed for maximum team impact..
  • You have a history of using your technical experience to make decisions while weighing stability, performance, velocity, and user experience when the right answer is unclear.

Even Better If…

  • You’ve specialized in managing high performing mobile teams either currently or in the past.
