The Commercial Engines Air Systems
Design & Integration (ASDI) organization is seeking a driven engineering intern for summer 2027 to join our team at the East Hartford, CT campus. ASDI offers a unique opportunity to work at the heart of the engine system.
Our discipline defines the physical and functional requirements that shape internal and external air system architectures, including system cooling and sealing flows, bearing load management, risk assessment and mitigation, and clearance control.
Success in this dynamic discipline is essential to delivering a competitive propulsion system. ASDI engineers develop a broad, system‑level perspective—understanding how design, air systems, thermal environments, mechanical loads, engine performance and control strategies interact across the entire engine.
This discipline requires seamless integration with adjacent system disciplines, close collaboration with module centers and part owners, and a strong aptitude for multidisciplinary problem‑solving. It offers an exceptional opportunity to apply and grow systems‑engineering skills while influencing the design and performance of a complex engine architecture.
As an Air Systems Design & Integration (ASDI) Engineering intern, at Pratt & Whitney, you will……
- Perform detailed internal air system flow analyses to evaluate performance, cooling, and sealing effectiveness for commercial engine programs
- Support cutting-edge development engine testing, transforming raw data into actionable engineering sights to shape critical design decisions.
- Execute probabilistic studies to quantify complex system behavior and assess overall design robustness.
- Investigate flow system options through trade studies that directly impact design choices and engine capabilities.
What You Will Learn
- Learn how commercial jet engine air systems truly work, building a strong foundation in internal air systems architecture, gas turbine engine performance and internal air system flow analysis.
- Develop a broad, system‑level engineering perspective by seeing how different design decisions, operating environments, and performance factors interact across a complex system.
- Gain experience in applying the core principles of fluid mechanics to a real engineering challenge by analyzing how air moves, cools, and interacts within a jet engine’s complex internal flow system
- Strengthen your systems engineering skills by working on multidisciplinary challenges that require you to connect dots across design, analysis, testing, and hardware understanding.
- Build confidence in making data-driven engineering decisions, using real analysis tools and test insights to understand tradeoffs and shape engine design directions.
- Gain exposure to Pratt & Whitney’s products and technologies, with insights into how teams across the company contribute to designing, building, and supporting world‑class propulsion systems.
- Engineering Interns at Pratt & Whitney work on challenging, meaningful, and impactful projects across our business.
- Our intern program seeks to help you develop an understanding of the aerospace industry and learn about our company and its operations.
Qualifications
You Must Have
- Must be pursuing Bachelor’s or Advanced degree in Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics field and actively enrolled through the completion of the internship session.
- Must have a minimum of 30 hours of credit by the start of the internship session.
- Minimum 3.0 Cumulative GPA
Experience may be obtained through on-the-job experience, research, coursework, or projects
Qualifications We Prefer
- Pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering
- Coursework and exposure to Applied Thermodynamics, Compressible Flow, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, and/or Turbomachinery Component Design
- Experience with Python, C++ and/or MATLAB languages
- Prior RTX internship, co-op, or work experience.
