Red 6 is an innovative Augmented Reality (AR) technology startup leading the way in synthetic air combat training. Our primary technology, supporting our ATARS product, enables pilots to simulate the cognitive challenges of flying while accessing realistic, scalable training in dynamic outdoor environments.

Role Summary

In this role, you will translate high-level product needs into actionable mechanical design solutions.

You will collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to define requirements, align on technical approaches, and develop the documentation needed to support implementation, verification, and production, including bills of materials (BOMs), assembly instructions, design specifications, test plans, schedules, and issue-tracking records.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical engineering and design reviews activities within a cross-functional team environment.
• Develop mechanical drawings and specifications; review vendor design proposals for technical compliance and system-level mechanical design support for products in development.
• Gather and define component-level design requirements and specifications with stakeholders across disciplines.
• Conduct research and development to identify optimal technologies within product cost constraints.
• Partner with discipline leads to establish guidelines and requirements for system level and component level specifications.
• Apply sound engineering principles and precision-tolerance techniques to the design of optical and mechanical systems.
• Lead engineering design reviews.
• Drive design improvements that address customer-reported reliability and usability issues.
• Collaborate across disciplines and provide technical guidance to team members in issue resolution and product development.
• Mature early prototypes through increasing levels of fidelity and translate preliminary concepts into production-ready products.
• Collaborate with Project Management to develop product schedules and manage design-development activities accordingly.
• Plan and execute simulation, modeling, design, and test activities throughout the product development lifecycle.
• Troubleshoot system level issues and develop and implement verification tests.
• Create development test plans to ensure compliance with applicable industry standards.
• Perform system and subsystem-level design, modeling, and prototyping.
• Conduct structural analysis using hand calculations and finite element analysis (FEA).
• Apply design-for-manufacturability and design-for-production principles.
• Create production drawings and apply and interpret Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
• Provide status reports and supporting technical documentation.
• Research and apply advanced materials and manufacturing processes for cross-disciplinary mechanical, optical, and electrical system components.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• 2-5 years of hands-on product design and prototyping experience, with demonstrated work in precision mechanisms, electromechanical systems, and/or optical systems working in a multidisciplinary engineering or design role supporting consumer-electronics or comparable product-development programs.
• Experience collaborating with Industrial Design, Engineering, Research, and cross-functional stakeholders to solve complex product-design and user-experience challenges.
• Strong knowledge of 3D mathematics, numerical methods, modeling, and simulation.
• Strong design-for-manufacturability (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) skills, including part and assembly tolerance management.
• Knowledge of manufacturing methods and rapid-prototyping processes.
• Experience with mechanical integration of PCBs, PCBAs, and flexible circuits.
• Understanding of system- and module-level tradeoffs among mechanical, optical, electrical, thermal, and manufacturing performance.
• Experience creating mechanical test procedures and supporting product verification activities.
• Experience applying finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and related engineering-analysis tools.
• Experience translating Industrial Design intent into manufacturable mechanical design solutions.
• Experience with production processes such as plastic injection molding, casting, metal injection molding (MIM), and machining.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required to meet clearance eligibility requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with AR/VR products or technologies.
• Experience with microelectronics integration, thermal design, and fabrication.
• Experience designing optical systems.
• Experience designing for environmental durability, including high levels of dust and water ingress protection.

Estimated Base Salary:

$95,000 to $125,000, depending on experience
