Job description

About this role

At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology.

Come be a part of what’s next.

Job Overview

We are looking for a Software Engineer in Test who is passionate about quality and about mobile playback to join the Android Player team. This team owns everything about playback in the Netflix Android app outside of the UI, from streaming and offline downloads to the foundations that live events and ad-supported viewing are built on.

You will own how we prove that playback works, across thousands of Android devices, on a client that ships every week. Right now that means deepening automation coverage for live and advertising, keeping a shared device lab fast and honest, and making test results a signal the team trusts enough to block a merge or a release on.

About the role

  • Own the Android Player test strategy, deciding what gets verified at the unit, integration, and end-to-end layers, and which tests earn the right to block a pull request or a release.
  • Build the automation frameworks, tooling, and infrastructure that make that coverage possible, not just the tests that run on top of them.
  • Grow automated coverage for live events and ad-supported playback, where defects in the field carry the most risk and where test infrastructure is still maturing.
  • Treat the device lab as the finite, shared resource it is, making deliberate choices about device coverage so suites stay fast and lab time goes where it buys the most signal.
  • Drive down flakiness and runtime, and retire tests that no longer change a decision.
  • Support release readiness and live event readiness for a client that ships every week, including participation in the on-call rotation behind live gating.
  • Raise the quality bar across the whole team through code review, mentorship, and influence, so that testability is designed in rather than added later.
  • Exemplify the Netflix culture by understanding, advocating, and demonstrating its values.

What sets you apart

  • You have deep experience ensuring the quality of consumer Android applications at scale, with real depth in Kotlin, Java, and the Android SDK.
  • You are an engineer first, with the software chops to build test frameworks, harnesses, and CI tooling from the ground up rather than only consuming what others build.
  • You test at every layer of the stack, not just end-to-end UI automation, and you use judgment to put each test where it belongs across unit, Robolectric, integration, screenshot, and on-device suites.
  • You are curious about audio and video and how streaming works, including adaptive streaming, DRM, codecs, hardware and software decode, and player frameworks such as ExoPlayer.
  • You know the Android device ecosystem first-hand, including the range of hardware capabilities across SoCs and OEMs, and what it takes to prove consistent playback across many device generations and price points.
  • You have applied AI tooling in a testing context, using it to generate tests, triage failures, analyze flakiness, or close coverage gaps, and you bring that experience to quality problems rather than waiting for tools to be handed to you.
  • You are comfortable drawing the line between what should be automated and what should stay manual, and you defend that line with data and judgment rather than dogma.
  • You are a systems thinker who can reason through the interactions of client, network, and backend, in a domain where playback failures are often emergent and hard to reproduce.
  • You communicate clearly and build collaboration across boundaries, with UI counterparts, fellow Player engineers on iOS and TV, product managers, and data science partners.

Why Netflix?

  • Collaborate every day with a high performing team that values selflessness, inclusion, and candor.
  • Make your impact on a product loved by hundreds of millions around the world.
  • Work side by side with your team and partners in Los Gatos.
  • Strong parental leave policy and family forming benefits.
