Overview

Welcome to one of the most dynamic and high-impact areas at Microsoft— Communications. The Microsoft AI (MAI) Communications team is seeking an experienced and passionate Senior Communications Manager to help drive communications around MAI's frontier model launches and other major technical moments.

In this highly visible role, you will partner with world-class researchers, engineers, product teams, and communications professionals to lead communications for MAI’s frontier model launches. You will shape the positioning and narrative, drive launch readiness and external engagement, and sustain momentum after release.

You will also support select research breakthroughs, product innovations, and other high-impact technical moments that showcase MAI’s progress and leadership in AI.

You will build trusted relationships across the AI ecosystem, engaging with media, creators, developers, researchers, thought leaders, and industry communities who are shaping how models are discovered, tested, discussed, and understood.

Responsibilities

The Senior Communications Manager is responsible for the following:

  • Develop and execute communications strategies for MAI model launches, research releases, capability announcements, product integrations, and other major technical news moments.
  • Build and maintain relationships with technology media, AI creators, developers, technical influencers, researchers, and other voices actively shaping the conversation around AI models.
  • Translate complex technical concepts into clear, compelling stories for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Develop messaging, briefing strategies, communications materials, launch plans, and spokesperson preparation for executives and technical leaders.
  • Partner closely with researchers, engineers, product managers, marketing, social, legal, policy, and communications teams to develop and execute integrated communications plans.
  • Identify proactive storytelling opportunities that demonstrate MAI’s technical progress and differentiation beyond major launches.
  • Monitor industry and competitive narratives to identify communications opportunities and potential reputational risks.
  • Contribute across the broader MAI communications portfolio as priorities and business needs evolve.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Marketing, Communications, Finance, or related field AND 4+ years communications, marketing operations, field operations, program management, project management, or related experience
  • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, English, Business, or related field AND several years of experience in communications, public relations, corporate communications, product communications, media relations,
  • OR a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience developing and executing communications strategies for high-profile product launches, technology announcements, research milestones, or other major news moments, ideally in technology or another highly technical field.
  • Experience managing end-to-end go-to-market (GTM) communications processes, including planning, messaging, stakeholder alignment, launch execution, and post-launch amplification.
  • Experience partnering with researchers, engineers, product teams, and business leaders to translate complex technical concepts into compelling, audience-focused communications.
  • Knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI), technology, and innovation landscape, including industry trends, competitive dynamics, and emerging technologies.
  • Experience building and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders, including media, creators, newsletter writers, influencers, analysts, developers, and industry thought leaders.
  • Proficient writing, storytelling, and media relations skills.
  • Ability to manage complex, multi-stakeholder projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and ability to pivot quickly based on business priorities.
  • Familiarity with AI models, research, evaluations, or the broader AI landscape.

Communications IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U. S. is USD $106,400 - $203,600 per year.

There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $137,600 - $222,600 per year.
