We are seeking a Associate General Counsel to work on Meta's Central Security Legal Team, based in the United States and with a remit to support security, safety, integrity, product, regulatory and privacy equities worldwide. This role involves working with a cross-functional team on complex and evolving legal and technological issues across multiple jurisdictions.
Candidates for this role would bring both United States and international criminal justice experience, civil litigation experience, and a willingness to engage with in learning and working with new technologies and laws across jurisdictions and timezones. They should be able to work effectively both independently as well as with large multi-stakeholder cross-functional teams.
Key qualities include experience applying legal judgment to complex, ambiguous situations, track record of delivering results, ability to prioritize and deliver work within defined deadlines, experience developing legal strategies to manage regulatory and policy risks, experience communicating legal guidance to technical and non-technical stakeholders and ability to anticipate legal risks, adapt to shifting priorities, and collaborate across teams.
Associate General Counsel, Security Legal Responsibilities
- Identify and advise business and product partners on global legal obligations relating to data disclosure, platform safety and integrity, including child safety and other serious crimes
- Provide security, safety, integrity and privacy legal guidance on a wide range of product developments, including private messaging products, e-commerce and payments related products, Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality products, and business products
- Provide advice and support the processing of legal requests for user data, and manage the litigation of matters relating to user data preservation and disclosure in criminal and civil matters
- Develop and implement effective policies for processing legal requests and protecting user data
- Develop strategic approaches to managing regulatory, criminal and policy legal risks and resolving disputes
- Work closely with the company's safety and security teams to protect the people who use our service from abuse
- Provide advice and informed legal guidance in crises impacting the security of Meta and its employees
- Support legal and public policy teams' engagement with regulators and legislators on safety and security policy
- Collaborate with members of Public Policy, Legal, Community Operations, Product, Engineering and others on safety and security matters
- Manage effective relationships with key government agencies, regulators, and law enforcement agencies, in close collaboration with internal cross-functional teams
Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree from an accredited institution
- Active and in good standing bar license in at least one U.S. state or equivalent foreign bar license. Where the jurisdiction of licensure differs from the location in which the role is based, the ability to promptly obtain permission to practice law for Meta in that location
- 8+ years of legal experience as a practicing attorney, including law firm, in-house, or government experience
- Demonstrated business judgment and client counseling skills
- Effective communication skills and experience working with cross functional teams
- Experience managing and handling legal and regulatory issues
- Substantial experience with U.S. law, particularly the Stored Communications Act, Wiretap Act, Pen Register/Trap and Trace Statute
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience providing guidance to providers in responding to law enforcement requests and regulatory requests
- Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologies
- Experience with Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty requests, Letters Rogatory, or other forms of international cooperation
- Understanding of major EU laws regarding data disclosure and content moderation, including familiarity with the European General Data Protection Regulation. Criminal and civil litigation experience
- Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize/redesign workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements)
- Experience with the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, Stored Communications Act, General Data Protection Regulation, and other analogous U.S. and international laws
- Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews)
- Experience advising technology or telecommunications companies as in-house or outside counsel on regulatory, safety and security matters, investigations, policy and/or criminal process

United States of America: $233,000/year to $313,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits
Individual compensation is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base hourly rate, monthly rate, or annual salary only, and do not include bonus, equity or sales incentives, if applicable. In addition to base compensation, Meta offers benefits.
