Job description

About this role

About Us_

// At Masabi, we’re driving the fare payment revolution, powering the journeys of millions all over the world. We build fare collection platforms that allow riders to seamlessly buy and present tickets for public transport either on their mobile phones, from a ticket machine, or even by tapping their bank card to travel.

Our Justride platform is used in over 250 locations globally, including some of the largest cities in the world. With our industry-first mobile ticketing SDK, we’ve partnered with large players in the transport space, including Uber, Moovit and Transit.

Your own journey is important to us too. Choosing a role here means joining a network of innovators from all walks of life; a group of passionate individuals who consistently deliver. Here, you’ll find the tools you need to build the career you want.

Whether you’re taking the direct route or trying a new path, we’ll support you no matter what.

The Role_

At Masabi, we’re powering the journeys of millions by making public transport payments simple, accessible, and seamless.

We’re looking for Systems Engineers to connect our Justride platform to the physical world: the validators, faregates, fareboxes, point of sale terminals and onboard vehicle systems that riders and operators use every day. You’ll work across the device-to-cloud boundary, from SDKs running on fare collection equipment and our Android point of sale app to the cloud services that configure and monitor them.

As part of a cross-functional team, you’ll work closely with engineers, testers and product partners to take features from idea to production. What you build is what riders tap, scan and rely on every day.

Location_

This is a fully remote contract role for people based in India, working a shifted pattern to align with UK working hours as much as possible

Responsibilities_

  • Integrate and maintain Justride SDKs on embedded and hardware-enabled devices such as validators, faregates and fareboxes, including fare media validation, NFC and contactless EMV tap handling, and barcode payloads
  • Build and maintain features in our Android point of sale app in Kotlin and Java, integrating card and NFC readers, printers and scanners over USB, Bluetooth/BLE, serial and NFC, and keeping the app stable on devices that run around the clock
  • Build and maintain on-device services and integration proxies that connect to onboard vehicle systems such as GPS and AVL
  • Contribute to the cloud services that support our device fleet, including device provisioning, MQTT messaging, remote configuration, OTA software updates, and health monitoring and alerting on AWS
  • Help build features that keep working when connectivity drops, using local storage, sync and retries
  • Write clean, well-tested code backed by unit, integration, contract and instrumented tests, keeping hardware behind interfaces so logic can be tested without a device, and contribute to code reviews, CI pipelines, infrastructure as code, monitoring and releases for the components you work on
  • Troubleshoot issues across devices and the cloud using logs, metrics, adb, logcat and lab hardware
  • Take part in feature refinement and technical discussions, help shape solutions, and take ownership of your work and team outcomes

About You_

  • Clear, confident communication in written and spoken English
  • A few years of commercial software engineering experience, with a solid grounding in Android development in Kotlin or Java, including the app lifecycle, services and threading or coroutines
  • Hands-on with Android hardware: experience with at least one hardware API (NFC, USB host, Bluetooth/BLE or serial), and you’ve integrated at least one physical device such as a reader, printer, scanner or sensor through a vendor SDK or a lower-level protocol
  • Comfortable debugging on real hardware with adb and logcat, and curious enough to dig into byte-level or timing issues when the logs don’t tell the whole story
  • An understanding of how to design for unreliable connectivity (local storage, sync and retries), plus some experience with cloud services on AWS or another major platform and an interest in how devices connect to the cloud
  • Solid engineering habits: testing (unit, integration, contract and instrumented tests), Git workflows, CI/CD and Docker
  • You use AI coding tools every day and check their output carefully, especially for low-level protocol work where small mistakes are easy to miss
  • Able to work through ambiguous problems, ask for help when needed, and happy to share knowledge and learn from others

We don’t expect you to tick every box. What matters most is curiosity, a willingness to learn, and the motivation to take ownership of your work.

Nice to Have_

  • Hands-on device-to-cloud IoT experience, ideally on AWS IoT Core
  • Payments and contactless: ISO 14443, APDUs, MIFARE/DESFire or EMV, plus PCI or key management awareness
  • Ruggedised and POS hardware: payment terminals, thermal and QR printing (ESC/POS), AOSP, MDM or kiosk mode
  • Embedded Linux (Yocto, systemd, cross-compilation), C/C++ or hardware-in-the-loop testing
  • Go, gRPC, Protobuf, and infrastructure as code (Terraform/Terragrunt, or transferable experience with CDK) with CI for device and cloud components
  • AI built into your workflow beyond autocomplete (agents, MCP, test generation)
  • Transit or ticketing background

What You’ll Learn_

  • How a global fare payment platform works end to end, from the cloud to the devices riders tap
  • Hands-on experience with contactless payments, Android and embedded hardware, and managing device fleets at scale
  • How to deliver in a cross-functional, international team where engineers help shape the technical direction

Our Stack_

  • Kotlin/Java, Go, C
  • Android (NFC, USB host, Bluetooth/BLE, serial)
  • Embedded Linux
  • AWS, including AWS IoT Core
  • MQTT
  • GitLab CI/CD, Docker
  • Terraform/Terragrunt
  • gRPC, Protobuf
  • Grafana
