About this role

Employer-provided description, formatted for easier reading.

Chief Financial Officer

You'll be Firecrawl's first CFO. Finance here isn't a reporting function that closes the books and forecasts what engineering already decided. It sits inside the product: our pricing is usage-based, our cost of goods moves with the web itself, and the gap between the two is the most important number in the company.

You'll own that number and everything that feeds it.

We grew past eight figures in ARR in year one and more than doubled it in year two. We just closed a $75M Series B, launched our second product, Alexandria, and are hiring at a pace that will nearly double the team. Finance got us here running lean, the way a company our size should.

The next stage needs a function built for it: accounting and controls, FP&A, tax and treasury, billing and revenue recognition, capital strategy, and the board relationship, built without slowing the company down.

You'll report to our CEO, sit with the founders on every decision that costs money or makes it, partner with our General Counsel and Chief of Staff on the company's operating spine, and own how we deploy the capital we just raised and how we raise the round after it.

Salary Range: $400,000–$453,000 USD/year

Equity Range: Competitive equity. Details shared during the process.

Location

San Francisco, CA (SF HQ). Hybrid, onsite 3+ days a week.

Job Type

Full-Time

Experience: 4+ years

Work Authorization: Must be authorized to work in the United States. We're not able to sponsor US visas right now, though that may change down the line.

About Firecrawl

Firecrawl is the easiest way to turn the web into data AI agents can use. One API call converts any URL into clean, LLM-ready markdown or structured data. It's the boring-hard problem everyone building with LLMs eventually hits, solved.

In September 2026, we raised a $75M Series B led by Smash Capital, and we're spending it building the largest repository of knowledge in the world. We hit 8 figures in ARR in year one and more than doubled it in year two. We have 187k+ GitHub stars, putting us in the top 40 repositories of all time, and developers, agents, and category-defining AI companies build on us every day.

Growth like this is rare, and we're just getting started.

We're a small team punching far above our weight. Everyone here owns a real piece of the product and company, end to end, and runs it themselves. No hiding behind process or headcount.

This is a place for people who want to work at the frontier: an AI company building the infrastructure other AI companies run on, not one bolting AI onto an existing product. We move fast, go deep, and are building the tools superintelligence will rely on to gather data from the web. That library is called Alexandria, and it starts now.

What You'll Do

  • Own the model: Build and run the driver-based operating model the founders and board actually use: revenue by product, plan, and usage; cost per successful request; margin by product and customer; headcount; and cash. If the model says something the company doesn't want to hear, you say it first
  • Own gross margin: Instrument cost of goods across proxies, compute, browser fleets, and model inference. Know the margin of every endpoint and every large customer, and set pricing and packaging guardrails with product so growth never quietly eats margin. With a second product in market, margin by product stops being theoretical
  • Run pricing economics: Credits, prepaid and pay-as-you-go, plan tiers, enterprise contracts, overages, and discount authority, decided with product and revenue. Pricing is a finance decision here, and you're the finance decision-maker
  • Build accounting for a usage-based business: Revenue recognition built for consumption and prepaid credits, deferred revenue and breakage, a clean monthly close, billing and a ledger that stay in lockstep as volume grows, and audit readiness ahead of the board asking for it
  • Deploy the Series B: Decide how fast we spend what we raised and on what: headcount, infrastructure, and the bets in between. Build the model, data room, and narrative for the next round so it's ready before we need it, then run that raise end to end with the CEO
  • Run board and investor reporting: Metric definitions the whole company runs on (ARR, net revenue retention, gross margin, burn multiple), a board package that gets to the point in ten pages, and investor relationships that run through you between rounds
  • Own tax, treasury, and entity structure: Sales tax and VAT on API usage around the world, R&D credits, transfer pricing, treaty paperwork, and cash and banking for a team spread across roughly a dozen countries, including whether and when our Toronto Hub becomes its own entity
  • Own spend: Headcount planning and comp economics with our Chief of Staff (a hiring plan that nearly doubles the company is a finance problem before it's a recruiting one), procurement including our largest infrastructure and vendor commitments, office leases, insurance, and approval thresholds that keep us fast without being sloppy
  • Treat tokens as a P&L line: Model inference is both our cost of goods and how the company gets its work done. Know what we spend on it, what it returns, and where the next dollar of compute should go, whether that's a customer endpoint or an internal agent
  • Build the team and the stack: Hire a controller and an FP&A lead when the moment is right, choose the stack for the company we're becoming, not the one we were, and make finance the most automated and most instrumented function in a company that builds AI infrastructure
  • Pick up whatever else touches money: Equity administration and 409A valuations with our General Counsel, corporate cards and expense policy, banking relationships, and the questions nobody has assigned yet. At our size the CFO's scope is the whole company

What We're Looking For

  • You've run finance, not advised it: CFO or VP Finance owning the whole function at a venture-backed software company, through at least one priced round and the growth that followed. A first CFO seat is fine if you ran the function under a CFO who let you own it
  • You know usage-based businesses from the inside: Credits, consumption, prepaid, overages, the revenue recognition and forecasting problems they create, and how pricing and cost of goods interact. Seat-based SaaS alone doesn't clear it
  • You've owned margin where cost of goods is real: Cloud, infrastructure, data, or API businesses where COGS was a line you negotiated, instrumented, and defended, not a rounding error
  • You're hands-on: You build the model yourself, you can close the books if you have to, and you know the difference between a forecast and a hope. You'll have a team eventually. Not on day one
  • You've raised and reported: Run a priced round or a meaningful debt facility from the finance seat, built the data room, owned the board package, and sat across from investors doing diligence. Taking a company through its first audit is a strong plus
  • You've built for scale before it arrived: You've set up the controls, the close, and the systems early enough that they still worked when the company tripled, without turning a fast company into a slow one
  • You give founders decisions, not dashboards: A recommendation and a risk read they can act on, delivered early, especially when the news is bad. If your instinct is to present three options and wait, this will be frustrating for both of us
  • You're an AI super user: Non-negotiable. You already run AI across your own finance work, you have opinions about where it fails, and you want to build the most automated finance function you've ever seen
  • Credentials: 12+ years in finance.

Preferred

CPA or Big Four training, or investment banking or growth equity years, followed by real operating time at a company that scaled fast. International tax and multi-entity experience is a strong plus

What We're NOT Looking For

  • The fundraising CFO: Great in the data room, hazy on where last month's margin went
  • The pure controller: Brilliant on the close, uninterested in the capital strategy, board, and pricing work
  • The budget cop: Measures success in spend blocked and deals slowed
  • The big-company operator: Has never built a model from a blank sheet or hired the first person on a team
  • The SaaS-only thinker: Believes usage-based revenue is seat-based SaaS with variable invoices
  • The compute skeptic: Treats inference spend as a line to cut rather than a line to understand. Here it's how we make money and how we get work done
  • The waiter: Needs a full team, an ERP, and a closed quarter before giving the founders a number

A Note On Pace

We operate at an absurd level of urgency because the window for what we're building won't stay open forever. If that excites you, keep reading. If it doesn't, no hard feelings, but this role probably isn't for you.

If you've spent a career making other companies' numbers work and want to build finance for one at the moment its economics are the hardest and most interesting in AI infrastructure, this is the one. It won't be boring.

Interview Process

Application Review: Send us your resume and a short note on why this excites you. Tell us about a call you made with the numbers that the founders or board didn't want to hear, how you delivered it, and what happened next.

Intro Chat (~25 min): A quick conversation to get to know each other before we go deep. What you've been running, what drew you to Firecrawl, and what you want next. Time for your questions too.

Case Chat (~45 min): We'll work through a real problem from our world: a pricing change where cost per request is moving underneath it, a margin question with no clean answer, or a capital deployment tradeoff between headcount and infrastructure. How you'd reason, what you'd measure, and what you'd tell the founders. Come ready to think out loud.

We care how you reason, not whether you know the market multiple.

Modeling Exercise (Paid, ~3 hours): One scoped, anonymized dataset. You build the analysis and write the one-page read you'd hand the founders: what the numbers say, what you'd do about it, and what you'd want to know next. Keep it short.

We'll read every word.

Founder Chats (~30 min each): Time with each of our founders on culture, pace, ownership, and how you'd work together. Time for your questions too.

References

We'll want to talk to a CEO you've served, a board member or investor who saw your board work, and someone who reported to you.

Decision

We move fast after references.

If you want to own the economics of the infrastructure layer of AI, and build finance for a company nobody has written the playbook for, you should join us.
