About this role

Wizard is the AI-native platform for creative work, starting with professional video: a native C++ editor and headless media runtime that humans, agents, and developers all operate.

Build the systems that let us develop and deliver dependable software at agentic speed.

Why this role matters

=========================

Wizard combines a native C++/Qt editor, a Python AI stack, and a headless media runtime. Our engineers need useful feedback quickly, and our customers need builds they can install, update, and trust with real work.

As our team and products grow, our build and delivery systems have to keep pace. We're hiring an engineer to own that infrastructure and keep improving it.

About the role

==================

You'll join our Pipeline team, which builds and improves the systems that let Wizard develop, test, ship, and scale. You'll own build and release infrastructure, working with Charles Harris III and our application, Core, and AI engineers. As our first DevOps engineer, you won't be on your own: Charles knows these systems well and will back you up on build and release work as the team grows.

Your initial focus will be CI, build performance, and reliable desktop delivery. You'll measure where time goes, address the largest bottlenecks, and make the resulting systems straightforward for other engineers to use and operate.

What you'll do

==================

  • Own CI workflows and build infrastructure across our components and supported platforms.
  • Measure the complete CI path: queueing, setup, dependency preparation, compilation, testing, and artifact handling. Improve the stages that cause the most waiting.
  • Maintain pinned toolchains, dependencies, caches, and reusable build outputs. Verify that compatible inputs reuse work and relevant changes trigger the required rebuilds.
  • Own packaging, signing, notarization, release channels, updates, and recovery to a known-good version.
  • Make the hotfix path dependable and measurable, from an approved fix to a verified installation.
  • Keep source revisions, build recipes, symbols, and delivered artifacts traceable so failures can be investigated.
  • Work with Quality & Release on release candidates and delivery checks, and with application engineers on crash-reporting integration.
  • Improve developer workflows through scripts, tools, and agent-assisted diagnosis. Evaluate new methods and turn useful experiments into supported systems.
  • Track runner, storage, and build costs, and recommend infrastructure changes based on measured needs.

What you bring

==================

  • Experience operating CI and build systems for substantial C++ or desktop software.
  • Familiarity with CMake, Ninja, compiler caching, and GitHub Actions or comparable systems.
  • Experience delivering macOS software, including signing, notarization, packaging, and updates.
  • Strong scripting and debugging skills across build tools, operating systems, and dependency environments.
  • An understanding of credentials, permissions, and artifact integrity in CI and release systems.
  • A habit of measuring before optimizing and making failures understandable to other engineers.

Experience with Windows or Linux delivery, embedded Python, GPU or media dependencies, and infrastructure as code would be useful.

Show us what you've built

=============================

A release pipeline, build system, cache, or developer tool you owned. Tell us what was difficult, what you changed, and how you established that it improved speed, reliability, or cost.

We welcome different backgrounds. We care about what you've built, what you've measured, and how you make systems easier for others to use.

About Wizard

================

Every so often, a new technology redefines how stories get told: the printing press, the telephone, radio, the film camera, the cutting room, television, the digital camera, non-linear editing. We think we're at the start of the next one, and we intend to build the company that defines it.

Wizard is the AI-native platform for creative work, starting with the hardest creative workflow: professional video. In roughly six months, our team built a native C++ editor and a headless media runtime that humans, agents, and developers all operate. Oz, our agent, ingests footage at roughly 300× real time and edits at 30–60× real time, and every change it makes stays inspectable, editable, and reversible.

Our philosophy is creative as code: every decision editable, controllable, composable, never generative slop you regenerate and hope for the best. Controllability over convenience. Artist integrity over automation.

Taste over throughput.

Our sister company is Story, a production company making video for frontier AI labs and deep-tech companies.

We work closely with them

Story is our first customer and in-house design partner, and its editors cut real client work on Wizard every day.

Our team comes from Industrial Light & Magic, Netflix, Apple, Epic Games, Lucasfilm, Blizzard, and 2K. We work in person in San Francisco.
