The ideal candidate brings strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), construction accounting, and job-cost analysis, along with a practical, hands-on approach.
Position Summary
The Controller is responsible for accurate and timely financial reporting and for maintaining sound accounting processes and controls. The Controller prepares and oversees weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting; manages month-end close; monitors project profitability, cash flow; and works closely with the CFO, ownership, project managers, office staff, lenders, surety representatives, and the outside CPA firm.
Key Responsibilities
· Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable, including contract and progress billing, cash receipts, collections, and payment priorities.
· Ensure that appropriate documentation for various sales-tax-exempt jobs is maintained.
· Supervise staff to maintain vendor and subcontractor records; collect current W-9 forms and certificates of insurance; and prepare annual Forms 1099.
· Prepare documentation for annual workers’ compensation and general liability insurance audits.
· Reconcile purchase orders, materials, equipment costs, and subcontractor charges.
· Maintain the chart of accounts, job-cost codes, project budgets, and accurate allocation of labor, equipment, materials, and overhead.
· Prepare monthly job-cost and job-profitability reports, including revenue-recognition and work-in-progress reporting; review results with project managers and explain significant variances.
· Prepare financial statements—including the balance sheet, income statement, and cash-flow statement—and other reporting required by ownership, the bank, and surety providers.
· Manage the month-end close, including accruals and account reconciliations, with a target of delivering monthly financial statements by the 15th of the following month.
· Prepare and maintain a rolling 13-week cash forecast; monitor cash balances and upcoming obligations; and recommend accounts-payable payment priorities.
· Coordinate reporting requests with Wayne Bank.
· Maintain equipment cost accounting, including fleet costs by unit and internal equipment rates; coordinate an annual review and update of B2W labor-overhead and equipment rates with ownership.
· Maintain books and intercompany accounting for the related mobile home parks and any additional owner-related ventures, such as a storage facility, as applicable.
· Maintain appropriate internal controls, including segregation of duties over cash receipts, disbursements, and accounts payable.
· Coordinate year-end close, tax preparation, and related requests with the outside CPA firm.
· Partner with ownership, project managers, and office staff on budgeting, forecasting, cash management, compliance, process improvements, and special projects.
· Supervise the preparation of certified-payroll and prevailing-wage reports when required.
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
· Five or more years of progressive accounting experience, including construction accounting and job costing; public accounting experience is a plus.
· Strong working knowledge of GAAP, construction financial reporting, job costing, revenue recognition, and month-end close processes.
· Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
· Experience with Sage 300 CRE and B2W strongly preferred; experience with comparable construction-accounting or construction-management software considered.
· Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with careful attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines.
· Professional communication skills and the ability to maintain effective relationships with ownership, project managers, customers, vendors, subcontractors, lenders, surety representatives, and colleagues.
· Ability to handle confidential financial information with discretion.
