About this role

Employer-provided description, formatted for easier reading.

We are seeking a Senior Robotics Software Engineer to serve as the technical lead for the software of robotic automation projects from early concept through commissioning.

In this role you will define the software problems to be solved, break them into well-scoped work for other team members, and act as the go-to technical resource for the project team, while remaining hands-on in the hardest technical work: cell-level motion planning, 3D vision, calibration, and system integration.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical lead for the software of robotic automation projects from feasibility through deployment, translating loosely defined needs into software requirements, acceptance criteria, and a technical plan with identified risks and mitigations.
  • Define software problems and break project scope into well-scoped tasks with clear requirements, interfaces, and acceptance criteria; assign them to other team members based on their skills and development needs; and track progress, review deliverables, and integrate the results into a working system.
  • Serve as the primary technical consultant for the project team, including technical discussions with customers, unblocking others and guiding their approach rather than defaulting to doing the work yourself.
  • Help develop software effort estimates for projects and proposals based on technical scope and risk, and flag early when technical findings change those estimates.
  • Architect the project application in C#, .NET, WPF, and MVVM on top of the common software platform, defining module boundaries, interfaces, and test strategy, and set project-level conventions consistent with company standards.
  • Lead robot integration for the cell on Fanuc and other 6-axis industrial robots, including multi-robot and external-axis coordination and the communication architecture between robots, PLCs, sensors, and cell software.
  • Decide which device-integration components for cameras, laser profilometers, ultrasonic probes, PLCs, motor controllers, and digital I/O become reusable across projects, and define the integration patterns other engineers follow.
  • Own motion planning for the full cell, including trajectory generation, collision avoidance, and offline programming, and resolve tradeoffs between reach, cycle time, accuracy, and process quality across subsystems.
  • Lead 3D vision and localization for the cell, including point-cloud processing and vision-guided robot correction, and ensure the vision, calibration, and motion subsystems work together to meet system-level accuracy.
  • Define accuracy and cycle-time error budgets for robotic cells, own calibration methods for robot, tool, camera, and workpiece frames, and design the validation tests that prove the system meets its requirements.
  • Implement and verify the software side of cell safety, including Fanuc DCS or equivalent safe zones, speed limits, and safety I/O, in coordination with the controls team and the cell risk assessment.
  • Drive cell-level performance and reliability, including communication timing between robots and devices, fault handling and recovery, and diagnostics that make field issues traceable.
  • Lead on-site commissioning and troubleshooting independently, make technical decisions in the field, drive root-cause analysis when automated systems underperform, and communicate technical impacts to the project team.
  • Mentor other team members through design reviews, code reviews, and pairing on difficult integration problems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Robotics, or a related field; Master's degree is a plus.
  • 9+ years of professional software development experience, with a substantial portion in industrial robotics or automation.
  • Expert-level C# and object-oriented design skills, with a record of building and maintaining production applications.
  • Deep experience with .NET, Dependency Injection, WPF, and MVVM, including making architecture decisions for multi-module applications.
  • Experience setting up branching strategies, automated testing, and code review practices for a project team using Visual Studio and Git.
  • Strong applied mathematics, including linear algebra, coordinate transformations, kinematics, and the error analysis needed to build accuracy budgets.
  • Hands-on experience integrating 6-axis industrial robots (Fanuc, ABB, KUKA, Yaskawa, or similar) in delivered systems, including multi-robot or external-axis cells.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering motion planning and collision avoidance for complete robotic cells.
  • Practical experience with machine vision using OpenCV, Cognex, Keyence, or comparable tools, including 3D vision and point-cloud processing.
  • Track record integrating sensors, PLCs, motion controllers, and industrial communication protocols, and designing the communication architecture for a robotic cell.
  • Led the software on at least two delivered robotic systems from concept through customer acceptance.
  • Experience leading the technical work of a small team, including problem definition, task breakdown, delegation, and review of other engineers' work.
  • Experience developing software effort estimates from technical scope and risk.
  • Experience configuring robot safety functions such as Fanuc DCS; familiarity with ISO 10218 or ANSI/RIA R15.06 is a plus.
  • Experience with robotic simulation and offline programming software, such as FANUC ROBOGUIDE, and with CAD-based path generation is a plus.
  • Clear technical communication, including documenting design decisions and explaining tradeoffs to the project team and customers.

This position is a strong fit for an experienced engineer who wants to lead the technical side of complete robotic systems, solve the hardest integration problems hands-on, and help other engineers grow.
