About this role
Position Summary
The Client Accounting Manager is the quality owner for our business accounting practice. You will review the internal accounting work of our staff accountants before it reaches clients, and you will serve as a senior point of contact for small and medium-sized business and non-profit clients, so every deliverable is accurate, timely and useful for decision-making.
Title
Client Accounting Manager
Location: Durham, NC (3211 Shannon Rd, Suite 410); hybrid
Type: Full-time, exempt
Key Responsibilities
Review and quality control
- Review staff accountants' work before it goes to clients: bank and credit card reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, payroll entries, A/P and A/R, and month-end close packages.
- Review monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements for accuracy, GAAP-appropriate presentation, reasonableness and clear variance explanations.
- Maintain and improve close checklists, review standards and workpaper documentation so quality is consistent across clients.
- Track review findings, identify recurring errors, and turn them into coaching and process fixes.
- Apply functional accounting and restricted vs. unrestricted net asset treatment where relevant, budget-to-actual reporting.
- Support payroll compliance, sales and use tax, and 1099 reporting for clients.
- Monitor close deadlines across the client portfolio and escalate risks early.
Client relationships
- Be a senior point of contact for business and non-profit clients: present financial results, answer questions, and translate the numbers into plain-language recommendations.
- Lead client review meetings and respond to questions with a clear plan and a firm date.
- Support new client onboarding, including system cleanup, chart of accounts design, and opening balance and catch-up work.
- Identify advisory needs (budgeting, cash flow, controller support, systems) and bring them to the Partner as opportunities to serve the client.
- Coordinate with our tax team and with Valley Peak Financial so tax and planning decisions reflect each client's accounting reality.
Team leadership
- Coach and develop staff accountants through feedback on their work, regular check-ins and training on technical topics.
- Help the Partner balance workload and capacity across clients and staff.
- Model our values of Stewardship, Integrity, Wisdom, Service and Ownership in day-to-day work.
Qualifications and Skills
Required
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field.
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 2+ years reviewing others' work or leading a team, ideally in public accounting or a client-service accounting firm.
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP and accrual accounting for small and medium-sized businesses.
- Advanced QuickBooks Online skills, including cleanup of messy books.
- Experience presenting financials to business owners and executives and building trust with clients.
- Meticulous attention to detail, with the judgment to know what matters most.
- Clear written and verbal communication, and a coaching mindset.
Preferred
- CPA license, or active progress toward it. We support CPA pursuit.
- Experience with non-profit accounting.
- Experience with payroll platforms, A/P and A/R automation, and close-management software.
- Familiarity with budgeting, forecasting and cash flow analysis.
