Hands-On Robotics & Product Development | SolidWorks | Machine Design | Prototyping

Must be in San Antonio, Texas

Role Description

Mechanical Designer / Engineering Technologist

Robotics & Product Development | SolidWorks | Machine Design | Prototyping

Valkim Technologies LLC | San Antonio, TX

Full-Time | On-Site | $30–$45/hour, commensurate with experience

Valkim Technologies is seeking an

experienced, hands-on Mechanical Designer / Engineering Technologist

to support the development of robotic systems for hazardous and difficult-to-access industrial environments.

This is not an entry-level position, and it is not a desk-only CAD role.

We are looking for someone who can move comfortably between

CAD, mechanical design, component selection, the shop floor, prototype assembly, testing and troubleshooting

.

The ideal candidate has designed actual machines or mechanical assemblies—not simply produced drawings from someone else's design.

What You'll Do

  • Develop 3D CAD models and mechanical assemblies for robotic platforms and related equipment.
  • Create manufacturing drawings, assembly documentation and BOMs.
  • Design mechanisms incorporating

motors, gearboxes, shafts, bearings, wheels, tracks, linkages, structural components and fasteners

.

  • Support the design and integration of pneumatic systems.
  • Select mechanical components based on torque, speed, load, size, weight and operating requirements.
  • Apply practical tolerancing, GD&T, DFM and DFA principles.
  • Work directly with machinists, fabricators, suppliers and other engineering personnel.
  • Participate hands-on in prototype assembly, modification and testing.
  • Diagnose mechanical problems and implement practical design improvements.
  • Support testing, field demonstrations and occasional customer deployments.
  • Take ownership of mechanical designs from

concept → CAD → build → test → redesign

.

What We're Looking For

  • 4+ years of professional mechanical design, machine design or product-development experience.
  • Strong professional 3D CAD experience;

SolidWorks strongly preferred

.

  • Demonstrated experience designing mechanical assemblies and mechanisms.
  • Working knowledge of components such as motors, gearboxes, bearings, shafts and power-transmission systems.
  • Understanding of machining, fabrication and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience producing manufacturing-ready drawings and BOMs.
  • Hands-on prototype assembly, testing and mechanical troubleshooting experience.
  • Ability to work independently in a small, fast-moving product-development environment.
  • Ability to work

full-time on-site in San Antonio

.

Particularly Valuable Experience

Robotics • Mobile equipment • Custom machinery • Industrial automation • Pneumatics • Machining • Fabrication • Welding • Sheet metal • 3D printing • Tooling & fixtures • Aerospace • Defense hardware • Oil & gas equipment • Heavy equipment • Field-service engineering

Education

An associate's or bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline is preferred.

Equivalent substantial hands-on mechanical design experience will be considered.

We care considerably more about whether you can

design and build working machinery

than the exact title printed on your degree.

You May Be a Great Fit If…

You are the person who walks into the shop when something isn't working.

You understand that a beautiful CAD model still has to be

machined, fabricated, assembled, tested, serviced and ultimately work in the real world

.

You enjoy solving mechanical problems, building prototypes, learning from failures and improving the next iteration.

And you would like considerably more ownership of the actual product than is typical in a large engineering organization.
