About this role
**This is NOT a traditional job and is a temporary national service position for 12-months**
Join the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas AmeriCorps VISTA Program. AmeriCorps engages individuals in service to meet critical community needs while strengthening civic engagement and developing future public service leaders.
This AmeriCorps VISTA position will serve with the Wyandotte County Public Health Department, supporting efforts to better understand and address the health needs of low-income and underserved populations through data collection, analysis, and community health assessment.
The VISTA will help develop sustainable data systems, create data visualization tools, and strengthen the department's ability to monitor community health needs and improvement initiatives.
The position will support development of the department's 2027 Community Health Assessment (CHA), strengthen documentation and processes related to Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) requirements, and develop tools to monitor Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) priorities.
The VISTA will also help map the availability and geographic distribution of healthcare and community service providers throughout Wyandotte County.
This role is ideal for someone interested in epidemiology, public health, data analysis, geographic information systems (GIS), or community health research.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Identify, compile, and organize secondary data sources, such as the U.S. Census Bureau, Kansas Information for Communities, and Kansas Health Matters, into a centralized data system for the Community Health Assessment.
- Develop standardized processes and tools for ongoing data extraction, management, and updating to support future Community Health Assessments.
- Create data visualization tools and templates, including charts, maps, and dashboards, to support analysis and communication of community health findings.
- Identify gaps in available data, particularly for low-income and underserved populations, and recommend strategies for improving data collection.
- Research Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) requirements related to Community Health Assessments and develop tools and guidance to align department processes and documentation with accreditation standards.
- Develop standardized workflows and reference materials to support ongoing accreditation compliance and future Community Health Assessment efforts.
- Identify and compile performance metrics from community partners and internal Public Health Department resources related to Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) priorities.
- Develop and maintain a centralized data system to organize CHIP performance measures, data sources, reporting schedules, and available results.
- Develop a user-friendly data dashboard or webpage to visualize and communicate CHIP performance measures and other shareable community health data.
- Identify and organize information on healthcare and community service providers throughout Wyandotte County, including WIC, behavioral health, primary care, family medicine, and other services that support access to care.
- Develop a centralized provider database documenting provider names, services offered, locations, contact information, eligibility requirements, and other relevant characteristics.
- Incorporate provider information into ArcGIS or other approved mapping platforms to visualize the geographic distribution of services throughout the county.
- Develop data visualization tools that allow the Public Health Department and community partners to examine service availability in relation to population characteristics and geographic areas.
- Establish standardized procedures for verifying, updating, and maintaining data systems and dashboards so they can be sustained beyond the VISTA service term.
You describe yourself as:
- Analytical, curious, and detail-oriented.
- Interested in epidemiology, public health, data analysis, or community health research.
- Comfortable working with spreadsheets, datasets, and research projects.
- Interested in data visualization, mapping, or geographic information systems (GIS).
- Able to organize complex information and communicate findings clearly.
- Motivated to use data to better understand community needs, identify gaps in services, and improve health outcomes for low-income and underserved populations.
