Description

Please note that this posting is for a contract assignment and is not a full-time employment opportunity with fortune 500 company. Candidates selected for roles will be employed as contract workers through clients approved 3rd party Direct Source provider for the duration of the specified project and will not be an employee of fortune 500 client.

Companies Infrastructure is seeking a Senior UX Designer for a 3 month engagement to lead a UI overhaul of our data center control system. This system is used daily by technicians and engineers to monitor, manage, and operate critical data center infrastructure. The current interface works, but it wasn't designed with learnability or usability as a priority, and it shows.

We need someone who can come in, quickly understand a complex technical domain, and redesign the UI so that it's intuitive for both experienced operators and new technicians ramping up. You'll be working directly with the engineering team to ensure every design decision is technically feasible and shippable within the engagement window.

This isn't a visual polish project; it's a ground-up rethink of information architecture, interaction patterns, and visual hierarchy for a system that has real operational impact.

What You'll Do

  • Assess the current control system UI and identify the highest-impact usability gaps, focusing on learnability, task efficiency, and error prevention.
  • Develop a new design direction for the UI, including information architecture, navigation, layout, and interaction patterns.
  • Create process flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity mockups that communicate the redesigned experience clearly to engineering and leadership.
  • Partner closely with engineers throughout the engagement to validate technical feasibility, understand system constraints, and iterate on designs that can actually be built.
  • Conduct lightweight usability testing or design reviews with technicians and operators to validate that the new design is learnable and effective.
  • Deliver a design system foundation (component patterns, spacing, typography, color usage) that the engineering team can maintain and extend after the engagement ends.
  • Present design rationale and progress to engineering leadership for review and alignment.

Basic Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in UX/interaction design for web-based applications, with demonstrated work on complex, data-rich, or operational interfaces (dashboards, control panels, monitoring tools, or similar).
  • Strong portfolio showing before/after redesign work, with clear articulation of design rationale and measurable outcomes.
  • Proven ability to design for learnability: reducing onboarding time, minimizing cognitive load, and creating interfaces that new users can navigate without extensive training.
  • Experience working embedded with engineering teams, understanding technical constraints, and designing within them.
  • Proficiency in modern design tools (Figma preferred).
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in design, human-computer interaction (HCI), or equivalent professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing for industrial, infrastructure, or operational technology environments (data centers, manufacturing, network operations, or similar).
  • Familiarity with design systems and the ability to establish scalable component patterns.
  • Experience with usability testing in specialized/technical user populations (not just consumer products).
  • Ability to prototype interactions (Figma prototyping, HTML/CSS, or similar) to communicate complex behaviors to engineers.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present design decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Comfortable working autonomously in a fast-paced environment with minimal ramp-up time.
