The Distributed Spacecraft Autonomy (DSA) Group’s Lowlight Universal Mapping in Extreme eNviroments (LUMEN) team is seeking a highly motivated and talented entry level Software Engineer to join our team of computer vision experts.

As a member of our software development team, you will contribute to the design, development, testing, and maintenance of computer vision software applications for lunar mapping and 3D reconstruction efforts. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in computer science, software engineering, and computer vision, with experience in Linux, neural networks, and 3D mapping.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain computer vision software applications using CUDA, C++, and Python.
  • Implement and optimize algorithms for image processing, feature extraction, and 3D reconstruction from spacecraft image sensors.
  • Utilize neural networks and deep learning techniques to improve the accuracy and efficiency of computer vision tasks.
  • Familiarity with neural radiance fields (NeRFs) and their application to 3D mapping and reconstruction.
  • Integrate SPICE kernels into software applications to leverage spacecraft trajectory and attitude data for precise image georeferencing.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including scientists, engineers, and researchers, to develop and refine computer vision software applications.
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to the improvement of the overall quality and maintainability of the codebase.

Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in computer vision, machine learning, and software engineering, applying this knowledge to improve NASA's lunar mapping and 3D reconstruction capabilities.

Required Skills And Traits

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Internship experience in software development, preferably in a Linux environment.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages, such as CUDA, C++, Python, or Java.
  • Familiarity with basic build tools, such as Git, CMake, and Make.
  • Knowledge of computer vision fundamentals, including image processing, feature extraction, and 3D reconstruction.
  • Understanding of neural networks and deep learning concepts, including Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP).
  • Familiarity with 3D mapping and reconstruction techniques, including structure from motion (SfM) and stereo vision.
  • Experience with SPICE kernels and their application to spacecraft trajectory and attitude data.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work in a team environment.

Other Desired Skills

  • Experience with computer vision libraries, such as OpenCV or PCL.
  • Familiarity with machine learning frameworks, such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
  • Knowledge of lunar mapping and 3D reconstruction techniques, including crater detection and terrain modeling.
  • Experience with agile development methodologies and version control systems, such as Git.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Ability to implement GPGPU CV pipelines in CUDA.

Work Environment

  • The work will be performed in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines and changing priorities.
  • The candidate must be able to work effectively in a team environment, collaborating with colleagues and stakeholders to achieve common goals.
  • The candidate may be required to travel occasionally for conferences, meetings, or training.

Basic Compensation

Jobs on this contract range from

$97,000.00 - $142,000.00 .

The offered rate will be based on the position, contract affordability, the selected candidate’s working location, knowledge, skills, abilities, experience, and in consideration of internal parity.

Additional Compensation

KBR may offer bonuses, commissions, or other forms of compensation to certain job titles or levels, per internal policy or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be in the form of sign on bonus, relocation benefits, short-term incentives, long-term incentives, or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
