About this role

Box Elder Job Corps Center is seeking a qualified, compassionate, and dependable Medical Doctor (MD) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) to provide on-site medical services to students. The provider will support the Center’s health and wellness program by delivering routine, preventive, and episodic care in a professional, confidential, and student-centered environment.

Applicants must hold an MD or NP credential and meet all applicable South Dakota licensing and professional practice requirements. Candidates should be comfortable working with adolescents and young adults from diverse backgrounds and collaborating with Center staff, nursing personnel, counselors, and outside medical providers.

Responsibilities

● Conduct comprehensive physical examinations, medical histories, health screenings, and routine assessments.

● Evaluate students who present with acute illnesses, injuries, chronic health concerns, or other medical needs.

● Diagnose and treat medical conditions within the provider’s education, training, licensure, and scope of practice.

● Develop appropriate treatment plans and explain diagnoses, medications, follow-up instructions, and preventive-care recommendations to students.

● Prescribe medications, renew prescriptions, and monitor medication effectiveness and potential side effects as permitted by law and professional scope of practice.

● Provide or authorize immunizations and other preventive services as clinically appropriate.

● Assess and manage minor injuries and illnesses, including determining when emergency care or outside evaluation is necessary.

● Identify students who require specialty care, diagnostic testing, emergency services, or other referrals, and coordinate appropriate follow-up.

● Review laboratory results, diagnostic reports, and outside medical records as needed to support continuity of care.

● Monitor students with chronic conditions and help ensure that treatment plans, accommodations, and follow-up appointments are maintained.

● Provide health education regarding nutrition, hygiene, sexual health, substance-use prevention, mental-health awareness, disease prevention, and healthy lifestyle choices.

● Support communicable-disease prevention, screening, reporting, and follow-up in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and Center procedures.

● Participate in health-related case management and communicate relevant medical information to authorized Center personnel while protecting student privacy.

● Maintain complete, accurate, timely, and confidential medical records in accordance with professional standards and applicable privacy requirements.

● Document examinations, diagnoses, treatment plans, prescriptions, referrals, follow-up instructions, and student communications.

● Collaborate with the Center’s Health and Wellness team, nursing staff, counselors, administrators, and external healthcare providers.

● Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and assist with the development and implementation of emergency-care plans.

● Follow Box Elder Job Corps Center policies, applicable federal and state regulations, professional standards, and infection-control procedures.

● Maintain professional boundaries and provide respectful, culturally responsive, trauma-informed care to all students.

● Perform other related medical duties consistent with the provider’s qualifications and scope of practice.

Required qualifications

● Current Medical Doctor (MD) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) credential.

● Current, unrestricted license to practice in the State of South Dakota.

● Current DEA registration, if required for the prescribing responsibilities associated with the position.

● Current professional liability or malpractice coverage, or the ability to obtain and maintain required coverage.

● Current CPR, BLS, or other applicable emergency-response certification, as required by the Center or the provider’s scope of practice.

● Ability to provide documentation of education, licensure, certifications, DEA registration, and professional liability coverage.

● Ability to pass any required background screening, credential verification, and onboarding procedures.

● Ability to provide services in person at Box Elder Job Corps Center in Nemo, South Dakota.

● Strong clinical judgment, communication skills, organization, and attention to detail.

● Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and comply with applicable privacy and medical-record requirements.

● Experience working with adolescents, young adults, underserved populations, residential programs, schools, occupational-health settings, or community-health programs is preferred.

Preferred qualifications

● Experience providing primary care, urgent care, occupational health, school-based health services, or residential-program medical care.

● Experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team.

● Ability to provide clear, respectful health education to students with varied educational, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

● Familiarity with electronic medical-record systems and standard clinical documentation practices.

● Availability to provide consistent, recurring on-site coverage.

Professional expectations

The selected provider is expected to:

● Arrive prepared and on time for scheduled clinical hours.

● Provide safe, ethical, respectful, and non-discriminatory care.

● Communicate promptly regarding schedule changes, urgent concerns, referrals, and follow-up needs.

● Use sound clinical judgment and seek emergency or specialty assistance when a student’s condition exceeds the provider’s scope of practice.

● Protect student confidentiality and disclose information only as permitted or required by law and Center policy.

● Maintain all required licenses, registrations, certifications, and insurance throughout the engagement.

● Cooperate with reasonable quality-assurance, credentialing, documentation, and compliance requirements.

● Treat students, families, staff, and community partners with professionalism and respect.

Compensation and schedule
