Staff Android Engineer

We’re looking for a Staff Android Engineer to provide technical leadership across the Android platform. This is a highly hands-on role focused on Android architecture, platform development, developer productivity, and emerging technologies.

What You’ll Do

  • Spend approximately 80% of your time coding and 20% on architecture, technical design, and implementation.
  • Design and implement scalable, modular, and testable Android architectures.
  • Build tools, libraries, and platform capabilities that enable other Android developers.
  • Serve as an Android technology expert, staying current with the latest Android technologies, tools, and development practices.
  • Drive technical decisions and help determine the best technology and implementation approaches.
  • Evaluate and introduce new technologies and development approaches, including proofs of concept and experimental work.
  • Review technical designs from other teams and provide guidance on complex engineering challenges.
  • Help shape long-term Android platform strategy and development standards.
  • Mentor senior engineers and lead by example, without direct people management responsibilities.
  • Create technical design documentation and communicate technical risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Explore and implement AI-enabled development workflows and integrations, with a strong focus on improving developer productivity.
  • Own automated and manual testing to ensure production-ready, shippable code.

What You Bring

  • 8+ years of professional Android development experience, including 3+ years in an architectural or technical leadership capacity.
  • Deep expertise in Kotlin, including Coroutines and Flow.
  • Strong experience with Jetpack Compose and legacy Android XML.
  • Strong understanding of modern Android architecture and application state management.
  • Experience with Gradle Kotlin DSL and Android build systems.
  • Experience working on an Android platform, foundation, or developer tooling team is a strong plus.
  • Experience building tools, libraries, SDKs, or reusable components for other developers.
  • Experience implementing or integrating AI development workflows and tools.
  • Experience with MCP servers or similar AI/agent integrations is highly desirable.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts, risks, and tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction without direct people management.

Contract Details

  • Long-term contract with potential opportunity to convert to a permanent position.
  • Remote opportunity; candidates located in Pittsburgh are a plus.
  • Candidates must be able to work Eastern Time hours.
