Occupational Therapist: Infant Feeding & Lactation Focused

The Breastfeeding Mama · Littleton, CO

Spotted 3d agofulltime
Job description

About this role

Part-time, flexible caseload | Denver metro | In-home and virtual visits

The Breastfeeding Mama is seeking an experienced occupational therapist to join our collaborative team in supporting babies and their families during the earliest months of life.

This is a specialized role focused primarily on infants ages 0–6 months, particularly babies experiencing breastfeeding challenges, bottle-feeding difficulties, and functional feeding concerns associated with oral restrictions.

We are building a small, integrated OT service within our lactation practice so families can receive coordinated support from an IBCLC and occupational therapist. We’re looking for someone who enjoys working directly with caregivers, collaborating across disciplines, and developing practical plans that fit a family’s daily life.

What this position looks like

This is a limited, part-time position with a referral-based caseload, rather than a full-time schedule. The initial caseload will be small, with opportunities to grow as the service develops.

The role requires both in-home visits within an agreed-upon Denver metro service area and virtual appointments, based on clinical appropriateness and family needs. Applicants must be local and able to travel to families’ homes.

You will provide targeted OT evaluations and follow-up care, collaborate with our IBCLCs, and help establish a thoughtful referral and care-coordination process. The role includes documentation, caregiver education, and communication with the care team.

Clinical focus

Our ideal candidate has direct experience assessing and supporting young infants with:

  • Breastfeeding difficulties involving oral function, positioning, motor skills, sensory responses, or regulation.
  • Bottle refusal, feeding aversion, difficulty transitioning between breast and bottle, and inefficient bottle feeding.
  • Functional feeding concerns associated with tongue-tie or other oral restrictions, including support before and after release when clinically indicated.
  • Oral-motor and sucking difficulties affecting feeding participation and efficiency.
  • Movement, postural, or positioning challenges that interfere with comfortable feeding.
  • Difficulty staying organized and regulated during feeds.

Care should be responsive to the infant’s cues, respectful of the family’s feeding goals, and grounded in individualized assessment.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate infant feeding and relevant developmental function within OT scope.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans with clear, practical goals.
  • Provide in-home and virtual treatment and caregiver coaching.
  • Collaborate with IBCLCs to address the distinct but overlapping factors affecting feeding.
  • Coordinate recommendations so families receive a cohesive, manageable plan.
  • Complete timely documentation and communicate relevant findings and progress.
  • Recognize concerns requiring medical evaluation or another specialist and facilitate appropriate referrals.
  • Help refine the OT service’s referral criteria, workflows, and family education materials.

Required qualifications

  • Current Colorado occupational therapy license.
  • Direct clinical experience with newborns and young infants, particularly ages 0–6 months.
  • Demonstrated experience with breastfeeding-related feeding challenges, oral restrictions, and bottle-feeding difficulties.
  • Strong preference for individuals with lactation credentials
  • Ability to independently evaluate and treat infant feeding concerns within your training and scope.
  • A responsive, relationship-centered approach to feeding and caregiver education.
  • Willingness to collaborate closely with IBCLCs while contributing your own clinical expertise.
  • Reliable transportation and availability for both in-home and virtual care.

General pediatric experience alone is not sufficient for this position. Applicants should be comfortable working with feeding concerns during the first six months of life.

Especially helpful

  • Experience collaborating with IBCLCs and other infant-feeding professionals.
  • Additional training in infant feeding, lactation, oral function, or early development.
  • Experience supporting feeding aversion and complex breast-to-bottle transitions.
  • Experience providing home-based care and telehealth.

An IBCLC credential is welcome but is not required. Direct experience supporting breastfeeding infants is required.

Why join The Breastfeeding Mama?

You’ll have the opportunity to help shape a focused infant-feeding service within an established lactation practice, collaborate with clinicians who value your expertise, and support families in their own homes.

Our goal is to make additional support easier to access when a baby needs more than lactation care alone, while keeping the family’s care connected and practical.

How to apply

Please send your résumé and a brief introduction describing:

  • Your experience with infants ages 0–6 months.
  • Your work with breastfeeding, bottle-feeding difficulties, and oral restrictions.
  • Your approach to collaborating with IBCLCs.
  • Your availability and preferred Denver metro service area.
  • We would especially appreciate a brief, de-identified example of how you have helped a young infant with a feeding challenge.
