About this role
The Opportunity
AI is reshaping the data center. As AI clusters grow, moving data between chips is becoming as hard as computing it, and the industry is moving optics onto the chip package to keep up with bandwidth and power demands. connection depends on placing and joining optical fiber with submicron-level precision, at volumes the industry has never delivered before. The systems that do this are still being invented.
TE Connectivity's fast-growing Optics organization is building that capability: fiber-array assemblies, micro-optics, fiber-to-chip interfaces, and optical connectors, along with the proprietary precision assembly stations that make them. TE designs these stations in-house, and they are part of what sets the product apart.
Why This Role Matters
One proven station is a start. The business now needs several: stations for different product families and next-generation revisions of the machine, each holding micron-level performance at production rates. That takes system architects who can own a machine end to end and build it on a common platform instead of redesigning from scratch each time.
You will be one of them, and one of the people who decides how fast TE can bring each new product to volume.
Job Overview
As a Staff System Architect, you will hold design authority for a precision assembly station: its architecture, integration, and performance, from requirements through release and into production. You will report to our chief system architect, who owns the common machine platform.
In your first months you will work alongside them on the current platform, learning the system, its process physics, and its design history in depth. Within about six months, you will take design authority for your own station platform.
You will lead through influence. A standing core team of specialists in fiber handling, alignment and welding, lasers, vision and sensing, software and controls, and machine industrialization works with you on each station, and you make the architecture calls that turn their work into one machine.
This is a technical leadership path. As the platform grows across product families and machine generations, your scope can grow from owning one station, to shaping the common architecture across several, to setting technical direction for how TE designs precision equipment.
Job Requirements
--------------------
- Own the station end to end: translate station requirements, including critical-to-quality characteristics, cycle time, and yield, into architecture, concept selection, and error budgets, and hold design authority through release and for the life of the machine.
- Make micron-level precision hold at production rates: set stiffness, thermal, and motion budgets; design the precision structures, stages, and optomechanics; and keep performance stable across shifts, machines, and sites.
- Build on the platform and improve it: use the common architecture and reusable modules, define clearly where your station needs something new, and feed proven designs back into the platform.
- Turn specialists into one machine: run design reviews, drive clear and dated decisions across process technology, measurement, software, and industrialization, and define what "good enough" means at each stage.
- Take the machine from build to production: lead integration, debug, and acceptance testing, then use factory and fleet data to drive the next revision.
- Design safety, serviceability, and maintainability in from concept, not after the first build.
Core Competencies
- Precision Machine Architecture: Turns requirements into machine concepts with credible error budgets for stiffness, thermal behavior, and motion.
- Optomechanical Design: Designs structures, stages, fixtures, and mounts that hold optical alignment at micron scale.
- Systems Integration: Connects mechanics, motion, sensing, controls, and process into one machine and makes sound tradeoffs across them.
- Process-Aware Design: Understands how the process inside the machine, such as fiber handling, alignment, and laser joining, drives the architecture.
- Technical Leadership Through Influence: Brings strong specialists to clear decisions and shared priorities without formal authority.
What your background should look like
-----------------------------------------
- 8+ years of hands-on precision mechanical or optomechanical machine design, including error budgets at micron scale.
- Architecture or design authority for a production machine end to end, from requirements and concept through build, debug, and release.
- A track record of shipping equipment into production, not only prototypes, and learning from how it performed.
Experience
- Optics experience is valuable, but not required.
- Strong candidates may come from semiconductor equipment, die-bonding or fiber-attach equipment, custom machine builders, precision motion-stage makers, medical and life-science automation, or metrology system design.
- Preferred experience may include modular or platform-based equipment design, metrology, active alignment, laser welding or laser processing, fiber handling and cleaving, hexapod or multi-axis precision motion, design for manufacturing and service, or replicating equipment across sites.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Optical, or Mechatronics Engineering, Physics, or a related engineering field. An advanced degree is preferred.
