About this role
ABOUT STUDIO DWELL
Studio Dwell is a Scottsdale-based interior design firm specializing in model home design, furnishing, and installation for production homebuilders, along with build-to-rent/multifamily and residential clients. Our team of roughly 25 people delivers high volumes of projects on tight builder timelines, and a disciplined finance function is central to how we run.
JOB SUMMARY
The Accounting Manager owns Studio Dwell’s day-to-day accounting from transaction to financial statement. This is a hands-on role responsible for accurate books, a timely monthly close, disciplined billing and collections, and a reliable view of cash. Reporting directly to the CEO, this person will be a trusted partner in managing liquidity and giving leadership the numbers it needs to make decisions.
This position will take over month-end close and financial reporting from our interim outside accounting firm and build on the processes established during that engagement.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Cash Flow Management
- Build and maintain a rolling 13-week cash flow forecast; update weekly and review with the CEO
- Monitor daily cash position across operating accounts and flag liquidity risks early
- Schedule vendor payments to align with the cash forecast, vendor terms, and project timing
- Track and reconcile client deposits and retainers against project activity
Billing, Accounts Receivable & Collections
- Invoice builder and residential clients promptly and accurately per contract terms (deposits, progress billing, and final billing)
- Own the AR aging; run a weekly collections cadence and escalate past-due accounts
- Maintain a clear record of each client’s billing terms, submission requirements, and payment portals
- Track and report DSO and collection trends; recommend improvements to terms and process
Accounting Operations & Month-End Close
- Manage full-cycle accounting: accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger
- Complete the monthly close within 10 business days, including bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations
- Prepare, record, and administer payroll, including payroll tax liabilities
- Prepare and file sales tax returns for multiple states
- Oversee and administer company credit cards, including receipt capture and expense coding
- Maintain chart of accounts integrity and ensure transactions are coded correctly
- Establish and maintain accounting files and records to document transactions
Project Financials
- Prepare model home project budgets and distribute them to the Design Team
- Analyze project profitability (job costing) and communicate results to Design Team leads
- Provide input on billing and payment terms during project contract development
- Close out projects upon completion, reconciling billings, deposits, and costs
Reporting & Compliance
- Deliver a monthly financial package to the CEO: P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, AR aging, and key metrics
- Coordinate year-end close and tax preparation with the outside CPA
- Work with outside accounting advisors on process documentation, controls, and special projects as needed
- Prepare 1099s and manage business licenses, insurance audits, and other compliance filings
- Establish and enforce sound accounting policies, internal controls, and GAAP-consistent practices
- Recommend process and systems improvements across finance and company operations
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
- 30 days: Complete handoff from the interim accounting firm; full command of the books, AR aging, and billing terms by client; first 13-week cash forecast delivered
- 90 days: Independently running the monthly close within 10 business days; weekly collections rhythm in place; clean, reconciled balance sheet
- Ongoing: Reduced DSO, accurate job costing, and a monthly package leadership relies on to run the business
