About this role

Field Service & Electrical Engineer

Steelhead, Inc. | San Antonio, TX

Compensation: $90,000–$120,000 annually, depending on experience Travel: 30–50% | Employment: Full-time

Love troubleshooting machinery? Enjoy electrical design? We should talk.

Steelhead, Inc. designs and manufactures automated water bottling and water treatment equipment for customers throughout North America and internationally.

We’re looking for a hands-on Electrical Engineer who enjoys solving problems, working with industrial machinery, and seeing equipment come to life.

This isn’t a position where you’ll spend every day behind a desk. You’ll split your time between designing and improving electrical systems at our San Antonio facility and traveling to customer sites to install, commission, and troubleshoot equipment.

We’re especially interested in someone who is naturally curious, enjoys technical challenges, and takes pride in getting complicated machinery running properly.

What You’ll Do

Field Service & Troubleshooting

  • Install, commission, and troubleshoot automated bottling and water treatment equipment.
  • Diagnose electrical, controls, instrumentation, and electromechanical problems.
  • Troubleshoot motors, VFDs, sensors, valves, pumps, and industrial control systems.
  • Work directly with customers to resolve technical issues, both remotely and on-site.
  • Support equipment startup, testing, and operator training.
  • Travel approximately 30–50%, primarily throughout North America.

Electrical Engineering & Controls

  • Design electrical control systems for new and existing equipment.
  • Develop and modify electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel layouts.
  • Select electrical components, instrumentation, and automation hardware.
  • Support PLC/HMI troubleshooting and system improvements.
  • Assist with PLC programming and modifications based on experience.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers, production technicians, and field service personnel to improve equipment reliability and performance.

Water Treatment Technology

  • Learn the fundamentals of reverse osmosis, filtration, ozone, UV disinfection, and industrial water treatment.
  • Support troubleshooting and improvement of water treatment equipment.
  • Assist with developing equipment operating sequences and controls narratives.
  • Develop an understanding of how electrical controls, instrumentation, and water treatment processes work together.

Prior water treatment experience is not required. We’re looking for someone interested in learning.

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent hands-on industrial automation experience.
  • Experience with industrial electrical systems and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and develop electrical schematics.
  • Working knowledge of industrial control panels, motors, sensors, VFDs, and instrumentation.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and practical problem-solving skills.
  • Comfortable working independently with customers and equipment in the field.
  • Willingness to travel 30–50%.
  • Strong communication skills and a customer-focused attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Siemens or Allen-Bradley PLCs.
  • PLC/HMI programming or troubleshooting experience.
  • AutoCAD Electrical or similar electrical design software.
  • Experience with industrial automation, packaging equipment, or process machinery.
  • Familiarity with pumps, valves, fluid handling, or water treatment equipment.
  • Experience developing equipment operating sequences or controls narratives.

The Right Personality Matters

The ideal candidate is someone who:

  • Genuinely enjoys troubleshooting and figuring out how things work.
  • Likes working with both their hands and their head.
  • Is comfortable moving between engineering design and the manufacturing floor.
  • Enjoys traveling, meeting customers, and solving real-world equipment problems.
  • Takes ownership of problems and follows through until they’re resolved.
  • Is curious about new technologies and willing to learn.

Why Steelhead?

Steelhead offers the opportunity to work on complete industrial systems rather than just one small part of a machine.

You’ll be involved in electrical design, manufacturing, equipment testing, customer installations, and ongoing improvements. You’ll work directly with an experienced engineering and technical team while developing expertise in industrial automation and water treatment technology.

If you’re an electrical engineer who loves troubleshooting machinery and wants a position with variety, responsibility, and hands-on challenges, we’d like to hear from you.
