Job description

About this role

Remote within the Portland metro area · Standard 30-hour workweek ·$101,400 - 117,000 annualized base pay, plus benefits

You’ve built strong accounting skills and earned the trust of clients and colleagues. You want to keep doing interesting work, developing your expertise, and leading - with more control over your schedule and room for life outside work.

At Spring Accounting, we’re looking for an experienced accounting manager to own client relationships, lead accounting review, and guide our team. This role combines the flexibility of working from home with substantive technical work and meaningful responsibility for how we serve our clients.

Our clients include local small business owners alongside growing biotech and AI-enabled technology companies. Their accounting needs range from dependable monthly reporting to navigating novel transactions, meeting reporting requirements for public-company parents, and preparing for potential IPOs. You’ll have opportunities to apply your experience, research unfamiliar questions, and continue growing professionally.

You’ll work closely with the firm owner and manage and mentor two staff accountants. You’ll have a voice in how we work, the authority to make decisions within your responsibilities, and the opportunity to build lasting relationships with the people behind our clients’ businesses.

What you’ll own

  • Accounting review and monthly delivery. Lead the monthly close and review reconciliations, journal entries, supporting schedules, and financial statements. Ensure that balances are supported, significant fluctuations are understood, and deliverables are ready for clients.
  • Thoughtful accounting decisions. Resolve technical questions, research unfamiliar issues, and document conclusions. Weigh the size, nature, and risk of an issue when deciding what requires deeper investigation and when a practical, supported resolution is appropriate.
  • Client relationships. Become the primary accounting contact for your assigned clients. Lead Zoom and in-person meetings, explain financial results clearly, anticipate needs, and follow through on commitments.
  • Team leadership and development. Coordinate priorities, answer accounting questions, and provide constructive review feedback that helps staff build their skills and independence.
  • Documentation and process improvement. Strengthen close checklists, client procedures, and review workflows so that knowledge is accessible and work is consistently completed.
  • Evolving client requirements. Help clients meet accounting and reporting requirements as their businesses become more complex, collaborating with the owner and outside specialists when needed.

What you bring

You have substantial accounting experience, including responsibility for reviewing others’ work, managing close and financial reporting, and working directly with clients. You may currently be an accounting manager at a regional firm, work in client accounting services, or bring a combination of public accounting and controller experience.

We’re particularly interested in someone who:

  • Has strong accounting fundamentals and can make, explain, and document sound decisions.
  • Enjoys technical problem-solving and takes satisfaction in thorough review, clear documentation, and reliable processes.
  • Exercises practical judgment about where to spend time and what matters to the client.
  • Is curious and resourceful when a situation is unfamiliar, and knows when to seek another perspective.
  • Communicates with warmth and clarity, helping clients understand their finances without overwhelming them with jargon.
  • Takes ownership of deadlines, relationships, and follow-through.
  • Enjoys coaching colleagues and creating processes that make everyone’s work better.
  • Is comfortable managing multiple clients and collaborating with a remote team.
  • Is proficient with modern accounting software and Excel or Google Sheets.

CPA credentials and experience with growing technology or biotech companies are welcome. You don’t need to have encountered every situation our clients face; you do need the judgment and curiosity to work through new questions.

Flexibility with a dependable rhythm

This is a remote position for someone based in the Portland metro area. You’ll work from home, with occasional in-person collaboration and client visits as needed.

You’ll establish a consistent schedule of 30 hours per week during business hours, with flexibility around start and finish times. We want you to have autonomy over your work and a predictable weekly routine, coordinated around client meetings, deadlines, and team collaboration.

Additional hours may be arranged in advance by mutual agreement, up to a total of 40 hours per week. The standard schedule remains 30 hours.

Compensation and benefits

  • This is a W-2 position with guaranteed base compensation equivalent to $101,400 - $117,000 annually for a 30 hour work week, depending on experience.
  • Your pay is guaranteed for 30 hours each week. Hours worked above a standard 30-hour schedule are paid separately at your agreed hourly rate of $65-$75, depending on experience.
  • Healthcare reimbursement benefit
  • 401(k) with employer match
  • Paid vacation, holidays, and sick time
  • CPE and professional development reimbursement
  • Company-provided laptop and equipment needed to work effectively from home
  • Mileage reimbursement for client visits

Room to keep growing

You’ll have ownership of client relationships, responsibility for developing a team, and opportunities to deepen your technical expertise. Working directly with the owner, you’ll help shape our review practices, service delivery, and client experience.

As you learn the client portfolio, you’ll take increasing responsibility for accounting quality, technical questions, and ongoing client communication. Success means clients feel well supported, staff have clear guidance, and work moves forward confidently under your leadership.

This role offers experienced accounting professionals a way to continue building their careers while maintaining a sustainable schedule.
