About this role
Staff Accountant – Energy Trading
Location: Houston, TX (In-Office)
Reports To: Senior Accountant
About the Role
We are a growing natural gas trading and asset optimization platform operating across major interstate pipelines in the U.S., with significant physical inventory and exchange-traded derivatives activity.
We are seeking a Staff Accountant to join our finance and accounting team in an entry-level, traditional-track role. The position is built for someone early in their career (0–2 years of experience) who wants a strong foundation in transactional accounting, reconciliations, and tax compliance—and who wants to learn how a trading business operates from the inside.
You will start with well-defined, high-volume responsibilities that keep the company running and that touch nearly every part of the business. As you demonstrate accuracy, reliability, and curiosity, your scope will expand into areas such as inventory accounting, derivative settlements, and the monthly close.
Initial ResponsibilitiesAccounts Payable
· Process vendor invoices, including coding, approval routing, and entry in NetSuite
· Prepare and execute payment runs, and respond to vendor inquiries
· Maintain vendor files and resolve aging or disputed items
Confirmations
· Review and match counterparty confirmations against internal trade and settlement records
· Follow up on discrepancies and open items until they are resolved and documented
Reconciliations
· Prepare and maintain account reconciliations, including cash, prepaids, and other balance sheet accounts
· Investigate and clear reconciling items on a timely basis, and escalate anything unusual
· Keep reconciliation support organized and audit-ready
Sales Tax Filings
· Prepare and file periodic sales and use tax returns across applicable jurisdictions
Tax Exempt Certificate Management
· Collect, validate, and maintain exemption certificates for customers and counterparties
· Track expirations and follow up to keep certificates current and complete
QualificationsRequired
· Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field
· 0–2 years of accounting experience (internships count)
· Working knowledge of GAAP fundamentals
· Strong attention to detail and the discipline to work through recurring, deadline-driven tasks
· Proficiency in Excel
· Clear written and verbal communication, and comfort following up with vendors, counterparties, and internal teams
Preferred
· CPA candidate, or progress toward CPA eligibility
· Experience with NetSuite or another mid-market ERP system
· Exposure to sales tax compliance, energy, commodities, or financial services
Who Succeeds in This Role
You will succeed if you take pride in getting the details right, ask “why” when something doesn’t tie out, and want to take on more responsibility as quickly as you earn it. The initial work is foundational—accuracy and follow-through here are what build the trust that leads to broader opportunities.
Growth Path
This role is designed to grow. As you establish a track record, you will have the opportunity to take on additional areas of the accounting function—including inventory accounting, derivative settlements, month-end close activities, and process improvements between our ETRM system and NetSuite—while gaining exposure to commercial operations and trading economics.
Over time, the right person can develop into a senior accountant and beyond.
