Data Analyst (Entry Level)

We weigh demonstrated quantitative and coding ability more heavily than years of experience. You will work alongside PhD-level researchers and managers building the analysis behind expert testimony in complex litigation.

SLCG Economic Consulting has two immediate openings for junior data analysts at our McLean, Virginia office. Recent graduates and candidates with up to two years of professional experience are encouraged to apply.

Founded in 2000, SLCG Economic Consulting provides finance and economics consulting and expert testimony to law firms, regulatory agencies, banks, brokerage firms, and corporations. Our experts have testified in state and federal court and publish in peer-reviewed journals. Our work runs through two practices:

• Securities litigation. Securities class actions, FINRA arbitration, trust management disputes, valuation, white-collar criminal proceedings, and regulatory investigations.
• Data analytics. Statistical work on large administrative datasets — including claims, transaction, and pharmacy data — using machine learning, spatial modeling, and interactive visualization.

What you'll do

• Clean, reshape, and merge large or messy datasets in Python, writing code that someone else can rerun months later.
• Check your numbers. Everything we produce has to be traceable back to its source.
• Build the tables, exhibits, and charts that carry the conclusions in a report.
• Explain what you did — in writing and out loud — to colleagues and clients who did not do the analysis.
• Move between matters as priorities shift and pick up unfamiliar material quickly.

What we're looking for

• Experience: Zero to two years of professional experience.
• Coding: Strong Python skills, including pandas and NumPy, and comfort handling data too large for Excel. R, SQL, MATLAB, or VBA are a plus.
• Education: A bachelor's or master's degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Data Science, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field.
• Data handling: Comfort working with large structured datasets, as well as messy text fields and regular expressions.
• Communication: You will have to explain your analysis, in writing and verbally, to people who did not do it.
• Working with people: We work closely together, so we look for people who ask questions early and take feedback well.
• Care and rigor: Organized, reliable, and careful with detail. Accuracy matters more than speed.

Nice to have

• Version control (Git), relational databases, or command-line experience
• Coursework, internships, or personal projects involving real-world data. Code samples and portfolios are welcome.
• Experience presenting technical work to a non-technical audience
