Job description

About this role

Senior Machine Learning Scientist, Microbiome

Job Type: Full time - Permanent

Location: New York City (hybrid, 4 days onsite) 📍

A fast-growing, venture-backed precision women’s health company is using microbiome science and AI to solve conditions that have been overlooked for decades. They have built one of the largest proprietary microbiome datasets in the world, paired with longitudinal symptom, treatment and outcomes data from over 100,000 patients.

They’re now looking for a Senior ML Scientist to turn that data into diagnostic and prognostic tools used by clinicians and patients.

What you’ll do:

  • Build diagnostic and prognostic models, including classifiers, risk prediction, biomarker discovery and treatment personalization
  • Work hands-on with shotgun metagenomics data paired with patient-reported outcomes
  • Own models end to end: feature engineering, training, validation, calibration, monitoring and production handover
  • Partner with R&D, product and engineering to turn model outputs into real clinical features
  • Set modelling standards across evaluation, reproducibility and how uncertainty is communicated
  • Help shape the modelling roadmap and decide what to build next

What you’ll bring:

  • PhD (preferred) or MS in computational biology, bioinformatics, ML, statistics or a related field
  • 5 to 8 years of post-degree experience building ML models on biological data
  • Industry experience shipping models into production, not just publishing them
  • Strong Python and ML framework skills (PyTorch, scikit-learn)
  • Hands-on experience with microbiome tools such as QIIME2, MetaPhlAn or HUMAnN
  • Deep understanding of compositional data, sparsity and batch effects
  • A strong product mindset and the ability to work across clinical, product and engineering teams

This is a chance to join a mission-driven women’s health company at a real inflection point, building models that go straight into products used by thousands of patients and providers.
