Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Android Platform Engineer to support the porting, hardware bring-up, integration, and stabilization of an Android-based In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) platform on next-generation target hardware.
The engineer will work across the Android platform stack, including AOSP, BSP, bootloader, Linux kernel, device drivers, HAL, Android framework, device configuration, build systems, security configuration, and hardware/software debugging .
The role involves migrating and stabilizing an existing Android 15 implementation to Android 17 , enabling target hardware and peripherals, integrating vendor components, and delivering a stable Android platform baseline for passenger, crew, and maintenance applications.
Key Responsibilities
Android OS Porting & Platform Bring-Up
- Port and integrate Android 17/AOSP onto the target IFE hardware platform.
- Analyze the existing Android 15 implementation and identify migration requirements for Android 17.
- Configure AOSP device, product, board, vendor, ODM, and related platform layers.
- Establish and debug the complete boot flow from bootloader and Linux kernel through Android init, native services, framework services, and system UI.
- Integrate system, vendor, product, boot, and vendor-boot images as applicable.
- Configure device manifests, system properties, resource overlays, init scripts, permissions, and platform configuration.
- Stabilize stock Android before integrating customer-specific middleware and applications.
- Troubleshoot boot failures, service-startup issues, framework initialization problems, and system-server failures.
- Maintain platform compatibility and required functionality during the Android version migration.
Bootloader & Boot-Chain Enablement
- Configure and integrate the applicable bootloader for the target hardware.
- Support board initialization, memory/storage configuration, display handoff, and boot-device selection.
- Configure Android boot, vendor boot, init boot, recovery, partitions, and related image formats.
- Support Android Verified Boot and secure-boot mechanisms.
- Configure boot arguments, kernel command-line parameters, boot configuration, and device-tree selection.
- Support fastboot, recovery, engineering flashing, factory programming, and software-loading workflows.
- Debug boot loops, image verification failures, partition issues, and bootloader-to-kernel handoff problems.
- Collaborate with hardware and security teams on board-level startup and chain-of-trust issues.
Linux Kernel, BSP & Device Enablement
- Integrate and adapt the Linux kernel for the Android 17 target platform.
- Configure the kernel for the target SoC, board, peripherals, and product requirements.
- Integrate vendor kernel changes and required device drivers.
- Modify device trees and overlays for target board variants.
- Enable and debug hardware interfaces and peripherals such as GPIO, I2C, SPI, UART, USB, PCIe, storage, display, audio, networking, and other board-specific interfaces.
- Perform BSP integration and resolve hardware/software integration issues.
- Analyze kernel logs, crash dumps, boot traces, and system logs to identify root causes.
HAL & Android Framework Integration
- Configure, integrate, and validate Android Hardware Abstraction Layers.
- Integrate vendor HALs and framework-facing interfaces for target hardware.
- Support migration of vendor modules and hardware interfaces from Android 15 to Android 17.
- Troubleshoot framework-to-HAL and HAL-to-driver communication issues.
- Validate hardware functionality through Android framework services and system components.
- Work with middleware and application teams to ensure stable platform APIs and interfaces.
Build, Integration & Platform Stabilization
- Work with Android build systems including
Soong, Blueprint, Make, and related AOSP build tooling
.
- Configure product/device build targets and resolve build and dependency issues.
- Integrate vendor binaries, libraries, modules, packages, and firmware.
- Support reproducible platform builds and release baselines.
- Analyze build failures, dependency conflicts, compilation issues, and packaging problems.
- Maintain platform branches, patches, and release artifacts using Git-based workflows.
Security & Compatibility
- Support Android platform security configuration, permissions, SELinux policies, and secure boot.
- Troubleshoot SELinux denials and policy-related platform issues.
- Support
CTS/VTS
sanity validation and Android compatibility activities.
- Analyze compatibility failures and work with engineering teams to resolve platform-level issues.
- Prepare test evidence, platform documentation, release notes, and technical handoff materials.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with hardware, BSP, middleware, application, build/integration, test automation, cybersecurity, and compatibility teams.
- Participate in platform bring-up, integration, defect triage, and technical reviews.
- Document platform configuration, patches, known issues, recovery procedures, and handoff requirements.
