Android Platform Engineer
About this role
Employer-provided description, formatted for easier reading.
We are seeking an experienced Android Platform Engineer to support the porting, bring-up, integration, and stabilization of an Android-based In-Flight Entertainment platform on next-generation target hardware.
The engineer will be responsible for adapting the Android operating system to the target hardware, integrating the Board Support Package, configuring and validating Hardware Abstraction Layers, enabling platform peripherals, stabilizing Android builds, and supporting Android platform compatibility activities.
The role requires hands-on experience across the Android platform stack, including bootloader, Linux kernel, device drivers, BSP, HAL, Android framework integration, device configuration, build systems, security configuration, and hardware-software debugging.
The engineer will work closely with hardware, middleware, application, build and integration, test automation, and compatibility teams to deliver a stable Android 17 platform baseline that supports passenger, crew, and maintenance applications.
The project SOW identifies platform deliverables including bootloader and kernel patches, BSP adaptations, HAL updates, operating-system integration artifacts, stable platform builds, compatibility evidence, test results, documentation, and handoff materials.
Primary Responsibilities
1. Android OS Porting and Platform Bring-Up
Port and integrate the Android 17 operating-system baseline onto the target IFE hardware platform.
- Analyze the existing Android 15 platform implementation and determine required changes for migration to Android 17.
- Configure the AOSP device, product, board, and vendor layers for the target hardware.
- Establish the initial boot flow from bootloader initialization through Linux kernel startup, Android init, native services, framework services, and home-screen availability.
- Integrate target-specific system, vendor, product, ODM, boot, and vendor-boot images as applicable.
- Modify product configuration files, device manifests, system properties, resource overlays, init files, permissions, and platform configuration.
- Bring stock Android to a stable baseline before integrating customer-specific middleware and applications.
- Investigate and resolve early-boot, late-boot, service-startup, framework-initialization, and system-server failures.
- Support platform customization required for the IFE operational environment.
- Maintain functional behavior and required platform interfaces during the Android version upgrade.
- The internal solution approach specifically includes bootloader and kernel porting, stock Android bring-up, HAL and driver enablement, vendor-module migration, and CTS/VTS sanity validation.
2. Bootloader and Boot-Chain Enablement
- Integrate and configure the applicable bootloader for the target hardware.
- Support board initialization, memory configuration, storage initialization, display handoff, and boot-device selection.
- Configure Android boot, vendor boot, init boot, recovery, and other relevant image formats and partitions.
- Integrate Android Verified Boot and applicable secure-boot mechanisms.
- Configure boot arguments, kernel command-line parameters, boot configuration, and device-tree selection.
- Support fastboot, recovery, factory programming, engineering flashing, and software-loading workflows.
- Investigate boot loops, image-verification failures, partition issues, and bootloader-to-kernel handoff problems.
- Collaborate with the hardware and security teams to resolve board-level startup and chain-of-trust issues.
- Document image-generation, flashing, recovery, and platform-restoration procedures.
3. Linux Kernel Adaptation
- Integrate the applicable Linux kernel baseline with the Android 17 target platform.
- Adapt kernel configuration for the target SoC, board, peripherals, and product requirements.
- Integrate vendor kernel changes and required device drivers.
- Modify device trees and overlays for target board variants.
- Bring up and debug board-level interfaces, including GPIO
Mandatory Skills:
- OS porting, BSP integration, HAL configuration, device enablement, build stabilization, and compatibility support
- Infotainment domain experience
