Job description

About this role

Research and Engineering Development, LLC (RED) is seeking an experienced Engineering Technician V to support Mechanical Engineering Fleet Prototyping and aircraft modification activities at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland. The successful candidate will provide advanced technical support in the design, development, modeling, documentation, fabrication, and modification of mechanical equipment and aircraft systems.

This position requires strong proficiency in PTC Creo, engineering drawing standards, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and aircraft modification documentation, including digital cable routing and installation drawings.

The ideal candidate will be a highly skilled, detail-oriented technical professional capable of independently completing complex engineering assignments, collaborating with engineers and technical teams, and producing accurate, release-ready engineering documentation.

This position may involve hands-on engineering, equipment fabrication, assembly, inspection, and testing activities in office, laboratory, workshop, hangar, or engineering environments, and work may require standing, walking, bending, and handling tools, equipment, and materials. This full-time position offers a base pay range of $90,000–$125,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.

What You'll Do

  • Perform complex and non-routine technical assignments involving the planning, design, development, and documentation of aircraft modifications, prototype systems, and mechanical equipment
  • Develop, prepare, and revise detailed engineering drawings, 3D models, assembly drawings, and installation documentation for aircraft structural modifications, equipment installations, and prototype components
  • Apply ASME Y14.x engineering drawing standards and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to ensure drawing accuracy, manufacturability, functional fit, and compliance with engineering requirements
  • Utilize PTC Creo to develop 3D parametric models, mechanical assemblies, and detailed 2D engineering drawings, including bills of materials, section views, and installation details
  • Develop and maintain 2D cable routing and installation drawings, including cable support locations, routing paths, penetrations, strain relief, and separation requirements
  • Support 3D cable routing and integration activities to ensure compatibility with aircraft structures, equipment installations, and applicable engineering requirements
  • Design and document aircraft brackets, adapters, mounting hardware, structural attachments, and other mechanical components supporting aircraft modifications
  • Review and interpret aircraft technical drawings, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) documentation, engineering specifications, and existing configuration data
  • Utilize PTC Windchill and applicable engineering data management systems to maintain technical documentation, revision control, configuration records, and engineering change documentation
  • Prepare detailed specifications, parts lists, material estimates, technical procedures, and other supporting engineering documentation
  • Analyze technical data, evaluate design alternatives, and recommend modifications to improve equipment functionality, performance, and maintainability
  • Plan and support equipment testing, prototype evaluations, installation fit checks, and technical inspections
  • Analyze test results, identify performance deficiencies, and prepare reports documenting findings and recommended corrective actions
  • Coordinate with engineers, structural analysts, manufacturing personnel, and installation teams to resolve technical issues and incorporate design modifications
  • Review engineering drawings and technical documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards
  • Support configuration management activities, including engineering changes, revision tracking, and as-installed documentation
  • Provide technical guidance and support to less experienced engineering technicians as needed
  • Perform assigned work under the general direction of a supervisor or professional engineer, ensuring completed work meets technical requirements and project objectives

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of nine (9) years of relevant experience performing engineering technician functions involving mechanical design, engineering documentation, equipment development, fabrication, testing, or modification
  • Demonstrated proficiency in ASME Y14.x engineering drawing standards, including ASME Y14.5, Y14.100, and related drawing practices
  • Strong working knowledge and practical application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles
  • Proficiency in PTC Creo for 3D parametric modeling, assembly development, and generation of detailed 2D engineering drawings
  • Experience developing aircraft modification drawings, mechanical installation drawings, assembly drawings, and associated technical documentation
  • Experience creating and interpreting 2D cable routing, wiring installation, or related aircraft systems installation documentation
  • Working knowledge of 3D cable routing principles, including bend radius, separation requirements, and physical installation constraints
  • Experience using PTC Windchill for engineering data management, drawing revisions, and configuration control
  • Ability to interpret aircraft engineering drawings, technical specifications, schematics, and original equipment manufacturer documentation
  • Working knowledge of mechanical design principles, aircraft structural attachments, fastener layouts, and material specifications
  • Ability to independently develop detailed technical drawings, specifications, parts lists, and supporting engineering documentation
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and technical problem-solving skills
  • Ability to independently manage complex technical assignments and coordinate effectively with engineers and multidisciplinary technical teams
  • Strong organizational, written communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Must possess an Interim Secret security clearance prior to starting employment

Highly Desired Experience

  • Previous experience supporting NAVAIR, Naval Aviation, or Department of Defense aircraft modification and prototyping programs
  • Experience using PTC Creo Cabling/Harness or equivalent software for advanced 3D cable routing and harness design
  • Experience developing aircraft cable and harness models, routing layouts, installation drawings, and associated bills of materials
  • Familiarity with AVPLM, IETMS, V-22 technical repositories, or similar naval aviation engineering data systems
  • Knowledge of applicable aerospace and military standards, including MIL, NAS, and MS hardware specifications
  • Experience with aircraft structural modifications, equipment mounting systems, brackets, racks, and cable support hardware
  • Familiarity with Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs), Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), and government configuration management processes
  • Experience supporting aircraft installation activities, prototype evaluations, and engineering fit checks in hangar or depot environments
  • Experience reviewing engineering drawings for compliance with ASME Y14.x standards and GD&T requirements
  • Experience providing technical guidance, mentoring junior technicians, or improving engineering drawing and documentation processes
