About this role
AWS Systems Engineer
Linux | Terraform | Infrastructure Automation
Federal screening: Must meet applicable IRS background investigation and system access requirements. ** US citizens and Green Card holders only. **
The Opportunity
Help build and operate the AWS and Linux infrastructure supporting the Internal Revenue Service. At Radiant Infotech, you’ll turn manual infrastructure work into repeatable automation, troubleshoot complex production issues, and improve the security and reliability of a federal cloud platform.
We’re looking for a senior engineer who can move confidently between Linux administration, Terraform, AWS networking, and operational security. You’ll take infrastructure changes from code through deployment, work closely with architecture and security teams, and turn recurring problems into lasting improvements.
About Radiant
Founded in 2008, Radiant Infotech helps federal agencies modernize applications, data platforms, and cloud infrastructure. Our teams combine hands-on engineering with an understanding of the security, governance, and operational requirements of federal programs.
What You’ll Do
- Administer Linux on AWS. Manage Linux systems on EC2, including systemd services, LVM and storage, sudo/SSH access, SELinux policies, and required FIPS configurations. Maintain systems in accordance with approved IRS security baselines.
- Build and maintain AWS infrastructure. Provision and operate EC2, EBS, EFS, S3, load balancers, and supporting services. Apply approved standards for encryption, tagging, availability, and resource lifecycle management.
- Engineer reliable cloud networking. Configure VPCs, subnets, route tables, security groups, network ACLs, DNS, and VPC endpoints. Troubleshoot connectivity between AWS services, Linux servers, applications, and enterprise networks.
- Develop infrastructure as code. Build reusable Terraform modules and CloudFormation templates where required. Maintain version control and secure state, detect and remediate drift, and integrate changes into approved CI/CD workflows with peer review, deployment validation, and rollback planning.
- Automate operations and standardize server builds. Use Bash, Python, the AWS CLI, and Boto3 to automate provisioning, maintenance, health checks, inventory, and reporting. Maintain AMIs, launch templates, and cloud-init scripts; apply consistent configurations through Ansible or AWS Systems Manager State Manager.
- Implement security controls and maintain system health. Configure IAM roles, instance profiles, least-privilege access, KMS encryption, certificates, and secrets management. Test and deploy patches, apply hardening standards, remediate assigned vulnerabilities, and validate systems after maintenance.
- Monitor systems and resolve incidents. Maintain CloudWatch monitoring and CloudTrail logging. Investigate GuardDuty alerts, Security Hub findings, and Inspector vulnerabilities with IRS security teams. Diagnose failures, restore service, document root causes, and implement corrective actions.
- Maintain backup and recovery readiness. Manage backups, snapshots, and retention settings. Test restorations and support disaster recovery exercises against established recovery objectives.
- Deliver measurable cost improvements. Implement and document at least one approved AWS cost optimization action each month, such as rightsizing instances, removing unused resources, or optimizing storage. Record estimated or realized savings.
- Keep operations documented and support security reviews. Maintain runbooks, configuration records, inventories, change records, and recovery procedures. Provide evidence of access controls, patching, logging, and remediation, and share operational knowledge with the team.
What You Bring
- Demonstrated experience building and supporting production AWS infrastructure, including EC2, storage services, VPC networking, and IAM.
- Strong Linux administration and troubleshooting skills, including service management, storage, permissions, secure access, and system hardening.
- Hands-on Terraform experience, including reusable modules, state management, deployment planning, Git version control, and drift remediation.
- Proficiency in Bash and Python, including automation with the AWS CLI and Boto3, and experience with Ansible or AWS Systems Manager for configuration management.
- Practical experience with cloud security controls, monitoring, patching, vulnerability remediation, incident response, and backup and recovery.
- The ability to investigate problems independently, explain technical findings clearly, write useful operational documentation, and coordinate changes with engineering and security colleagues.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting IRS systems, other federal cloud environments, or AWS GovCloud.
- Familiarity with CloudFormation, Zsh, and federal security baselines and compliance evidence requirements.
- Relevant AWS or Linux certifications.
